@CanAmBride: Totally agree, that would be awesome to just withold my taxes. The kicker is that those idiots would still be getting paid to do nothing but disagree with each other because they aren’t in the same party! WTH?!

I can remember the government shutdown in 1995? 1996?  I’m guessing this will be similar.  For me, nothing really changed.  Neither my husband nor I am employed by the federal government or by the military.  We don’t receive unemployment or social security benefits.

I do plan to apply for a passport for a trip this fall.  So I guess I’ll just wait on that a bit…

This shut down is odd because they’re suspending military pay. My husband is in the navy and right now i’m in school working under part time- his income pays our mortgage/bills/basically everything. We have enough money to keep up for a month without pay- but after that I’m going to have to talk to my family. Not everyone is as lucky as we are and can go to the “bank of dad.”

I feel bad for families who have SO’s overseas. I know a few women at home with their children and they depend on that income. It’s a scary time for them. 🙁

I do think this will resolve itself quickly though. I’m really suprised Obama is letting it go this far- this isn’t all his fault (both parties suck), but people don’t do the research and he’s the one who gets the blame. In the 2012 elections he’s going to get slaughtered. I’m actually willing to go without pay for some of the things he’s fighting for- long time supporter of planned parenthood here.

I’m not going to lie, this is gonna suck pretty bad for me if it happens. My Fiance is an essential congressional employee, so he will have to work this weekend and next week with no promise of pay. My parents are government contractors whose work would be totally cut off if this happens. So basically I would the the only one still earning a salary in my immediate family. I am very angry at both political parties right now. Also, I think delaying pay to military families is totally indefensible. I love America, but we as a nation should be embarrassed.

We’re waiting to hear if it will affect us.  DH is in the National Guard, so we’re not sure what is going to happen (if he will have drill/if or when he’ll get paid for drill).  It will affect my best friend’s family and my DH’s aunt’s family…both who have husband’s who are deployed to Afganistan and won’t be receiving paychecks.  Someone please explain to me how men/women serving in a war won’t have a paycheck for their families?  It’s horrible and disgusting.  A great deal of military families are one income families, so you can imagine how hard this is going to be on them. I do understand they will be paid….eventually…but a military salary isn’t exactly big, so going a while without a paycheck is not going to be easy.

@CanAmBride: Totally! If we just decided to have a “shutdown” and not pay taxes, I guarantee you the gov’t would have something to say about that.

Looks like they are working on something or at least funding the DoD for the rest of the year (which includes all military branches.  We will see if that happens.

I don’t work for the government, but the kind of law in which my firm specializes is all federal, so pretty much everything we do involves several major agencies.

We’ll be fine, but I worry about our clients, many of whom need a particular entity to process something by a given date or render a decision in a specific length of time in order to stay in the U.S.

What drives me insane is that Congress will still be paid in the event of a shutdown.  I mean, I kind of get why it has to be that way, but it still makes me nuts.

My husband is active duty in the Army and he’s deployed. We will be greatly affected by the shutdown. Luckily, we’ve been able to save since he’s been gone but we still rely on pay just like everyone else. I know all to well what it’s like to be living pay check to pay check. We were in that position just a few months ago and most army families i know are currently in that position. The whole thing is so infuriating!!

My dad is an Army civilian and will be furloughed during the shutdown. My parents definitely rely on his pay more than my mom’s. So, theyll really be struggling.

@RequiemOfDecember: You’re right, electronic returns will still be processed but paper ones will not until a furlough is over.

@Ahone: The issues at hand are a lot bigger than people living paycheck to paycheck. Even those with substantial savings and investments would be affected if their job disappeared. There is an emotional and psychological element of being 1) valued as an employee and 2) knowing that you are contributing to something worth doing; being suddenly told that you’re not worth the money or that your job is a waste to the government (which is how this feels to a lot of people) can be devastating.

While I am glad for your sake that you don’t live paycheck to paycheck, I think you’ve vastly oversimplified the problem.

Our nation needs to get it’s shit together, for a lot of reasons.

Government employee here.  It’s been a demoralizing week, hell year, thus far.  Gotta love being a political punching bag.  But we have savings, and Fiance doesn’t work for the government, so we’ll be fine.  Just hoping it doesn’t last long.  It’s all very confusing right now, in terms of when we go back in, whether we’re getting paid, etc.

@ddw: I agree. My Fiance and I do not live paycheck to paycheck, and we are extremely responsible with money for a couple in our early 20’s, but if my entire family is out of work for a significant amount of time then yes, I will be pretty screwed.

I feel so bad for everyone involved.

As a parent, I can’t imagine if tomorrow my job just wasn’t here.

My heart breaks for the family’s of deployed soliders who are not getting paid on time. I know how hard it is to rely on someone else (in this case the gov’t) and being helpless.
