This is my mother’s mother on her wedding day in 1955:
You can’t see much of it, but it’s a beautiful dress and my grandpa saved it just so my sister and I could wear it (although my sister bought her own). I’m excited to try it on! ๐ Anyone else wearing an heirloom wedding dress?

It’s beautiful! I was thinking of wearing my grandma’s wedding dress, but she was 5’9″ with a 23-inch waist, so obviously that was not going to happen for me!

I have to tell you that I love the portion of the dress that we can see. I think it’s very touching that you want to wear your grandmother’s dress. My grandma saved hers and I would have thought about wearing it if I ever thought it would fit me. Even if I wore the same size she had we are two completely different body types so that did not work.
It’s interesting to see people who use an heirloom dress and modify it a little to make it modern too. Were you planning on leaving the dress the way it is if you use it?

@NatAndTy: Your grandmother was quite beautiful! The dress, too, looks lovely.
I was offered my mom’s dress, but I decided not to wear it. I don’t particularly like the style, and since we’re so differently shaped, it looked funny on me. If you like the dress and it looks good on you, though, you should definitely go for it! I hope you share some pictures!

@NatAndTy: Gorgeous! War it for a vintage feel, it is so elegant.
My screen saver is a photo of my grandparents cutting their cake (60 years ago!) and her dress is stunning. Sadly even if it was around I could never fit into it, she was so freaking skinny!

I ended up wearing my moms dress! And it was gorgeous! My mom and dad actually made it, she designed and he made most of it!
Your grandmother was very pretty! I can’t wait to see what her dress looks like!

@FloretteLiz: Yeah, I was planning on leaving it as is. ๐ I usually really like ’50s-style dresses. I have the option of wearing my mother’s dress too, but she got married in 1982, so…it’s not really my style.
Also, my grandmother passed away when I was a baby, so I think my grandfather would love it if I wore her dress.

I’m supposed to wear a lace overdress that’s been worn by at least six women in my mother’s family, starting with the generation before my great-aunt. However, my sister still has it from her wedding, and since we’re fighting, she’s not letting me have it. Hopefully she cools off enough in the next year or two that I can get it from her (she lives across the country from me).

@NatAndTy: Haha, exactly. My parents married in January of 1983. The dress from back then were… special.

@bobbypinpearls: My mom made her wedding dress too! That’s really cool that your mom and dad made hers together.

@NatAndTy: That would be a wonderful way to have her there with you at your wedding. Do you think you will do anything like set out one of her wedding photos at the reception to honor her? That could be neat so that guests could make the correlation as well.
