Hi Bee!

I hosted an Art Deco, Gastby-esque wedding this past December. You can see pictures here:

The trick to a ‘themed’ wedding is to not consider it a themed party so much as inspiration. We carried the Art Deco theme by colors (white, gold, silver, etc), fonts/design of our invitations and signage, and decor. Not everything has to fit the theme, just a few statement items will make it shine through. This is your wedding, after all, not a costume party.

Art Deco, 1920s theme weddings are awesome. But please (this is huge pet peeve of mine) don’t call it a Great Gatsby theme, have you read the book? It’s not a love story and a horrible theme for a wedding.

hikingbride :  I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but more often than not when someone says ‘Gatsby themed’ they don’t mean the love story but rather the opulence and excess of the parties that Jay Gatsby hosted. Additionally, if you say ‘Gatsby’ the image of those parties is automatically conjured versus some people who don’t know what ‘Deco’ is or view ‘1920s’ as more prohibition – flappers and gangsters as opposed to the gilded gold.

hikingbride :  I had an acquaintance do a ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ themed bridal shower. I was like, you realize that the main character was basically a prostitute?

mrsv2017 :  Absolutely! You can have your cake and eat it, too. Beaded dresses are very popular right now so you can have your bridesmaids in dresses that call-back to the 1920s, like this one

Maybe some Eiffel Tower vases with ostritch feathers for centerpieces, some geometric patterns here and there. You can have a perfectly elegant party without high-stress or breaking the bank.

Thanks so much! I had a gret photographer and my hair and makeup artist made me feel so beautiful.

I’m sorry people are being so serious about the theme, don’t let it get you down and enjoy wedding planning!

Meganquita :  Right? The Capote book is a slice of existentialism and the movie features Mickey Rooney in yellowface. I know we all love Audrey Hepburn so I guess we can take that away from it?

mrsv2017 :  I think you’re safe just referring to it as Art Deco! It’s hardly an obscure term (I’d say different if you were thinking like…a Bauhaus theme) and is pretty well integrated into 2010s popular culture. Also, can we see pics of the dress?

my dress is a vintage art deco dress with a style twist but im in no way having a vintage or ‘gatsby’ themed wedding… you can have any dress with any theme, in fact I find it cooler when its not the obvious cliched choice personally

Speck_ :  I might be too thoughtful in some things, but I personally wouldn’t  do a literary theme unless I was confident in understanding the full meaning of things. But different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Eh, I personally wouldn’t have a problem with calling it a Gatsby-themed wedding, but to each their own.

A friend of mine had a Gatsby-themed wedding last year and it was SO much fun. She encouraged people to go full-out in costume and wore a beautiful Art Deco dress, but she has a very dramatic personality so it fit her. I say if you want it and it fits your wedding, go for it!
