I have listened to that song at least a dozen times, sung the words, and have never once thought “you know, that’s how Virginia Woolf killed herself!”  Seriously.  Until I looked up the lyrics and connected it to her, I would have never thought that the song was about drowning yourself.

I think its fine to use that song!

Honestly, even as someone who really pays attention to lyrics, I would not assume that song was about suicide based on only the first verse. And I highly doubt most of your guests would realize either, unless they are super into Florence and the Machine. Just my two cents. If you love it, go with it. I would only shy away from it if the connotation bothers you personally.

I like that song.  Most guests would never know what it was about, I had no idea.  So if you’re worried about guests, I wouldn’t worry about it.

However…I’m probably the type that will now think about suicide everytime I hear the song from now on…so in that case I’d probably have to find another song.

We had to change ours as well because our rabbi would not let us play Mendelsohnn’s Wedding March.  At first I was bummed but we ended up finding something else we loved so much more.  I’m sure you’ll find something else you really like.

I Love Florence but I agree, you can’t use it.  🙁

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. I love Florence + the Machine! If it makes you feel better, we are not allowed to have any secular music in our church! I have zero idea what we’ll choose at this point.

@Meowkers:  That is VERY understandable, given the history.

I listen to that song a lot and would never have known. I’d go with it anyway. I thought it was about a love so overwhelming that she felt like she was drowning in it and then she just gave herself over to it. lol, oh well.

I am crazy about Florence + the machine and had no idea what that song was about. Personally, i’d still use it. It’s sounds so beautiful and her voice is just breathtaking.
