That is a cool gift idea!

I think you could definitely do something like this on your own as a gift. You could buy reasonably priced serving plates/platters/bowls (or find cool vintage pieces on eBay or at thrift shops), and then donate to a charity in the name of your friends, and make a little card saying that which would could give to your friends along with the dish. There are calculators out there for how many meals X amount of $ buys at a food bank, so maybe something like “X meals have been donated in your name to X food bank.” (or your charity of choice). You could tie the card to the dish with some pretty ribbon to dress it up, or do color themed dishes: red for AIDS Task Force, etc.

Something similar – staying with the plates theme – I went to 2 charity dinners last year where they did something similar (and it worked really well!). In one case, artists had made dinner plates, and in the other they just used regular white dinner plates, and you paid for your plate and got to keep it at the end of the night, and then the money from the plate sale (and cost for the dinner) went to the charity. Everyone seemed to think it was a cool idea, we still have our plates at home.
