My fiance and I want to have a destination wedding and are thinking about doing it in Santorini. We originally wanted a wedding at Lake Como in Italy, but our budget was too small for the venues we were looking at. I had heard that our budget ($15,000 USD) will go further in Greece, however I know that Greece is still going through their financial crisis right now. Would it be safe to have a wedding June/July 2018? I am scared that vendors will not be able to follow through and that it might be risky to have a wedding right now.

We had our wedding in my hometown Antalya. It is very close to Greece and very similar to it. We had 200 guests (about 60 of them came from Europe and USA) and it cost 13K. Antalya is on the southern Turkey and is an amazing big city! If you are interested in it I can share the venue and all the vendors that I worked with. Our photographer was Kare Kadraj and they travel to Greece for weddings. I am a mediterranean and I know how hot it gets in the summer. Our wedding was July 1st and it was 112F. I say avoid July. I am sharing a picture of our ceremony area for you. The venue is called Akra Hotel. Our American guests loved the hotel!Good luck with planing.

ohhhh I went to a wedding in Antalya I loved it, it was so beautiful!!
Ive been checking out travel advisories for Greece because I want to go there for our honeymoon. From what I understand, the islands are pretty safe. Santorini is not crazy cheap but some other islands are less expensive. It may also be quite expensive for your guests to get there if you’re not already based on Europe. Good luck!! Hahahaha maybe I’ll see you on our honeymoon 😉

I love Greece, and was just in Santorini last in late 2016, and I can tell you it is by no means cheap. Santorini is the most touristy of the islands, and the prices reflect that. This is coming from someone who lives in Hawai’i- Santorini is not cheap! It is beautiful, but unless you have significant ties to the area (heritage, family, etc), I wouldn’t do it there if you’re coming from the states. Unless it’s just the two of you, it really doesn’t make sense for your budget.
Also, it is HOT in the summer. If you are set on this destination and can make it work, save yourself and your guests some planning time (10 months goes by quckly!) and go in the Fall.

Santorini will be very expensive for your guests, it’s not cheap for accommodation particularly in the summer months.

Santorini is really expensive compare to others Greece regions because it is super touristic.
You should look at others regions like Rhodes, Crete or Halkidiki and prefer June or September

The financial problems in Greece are not going to impact you as a tourist in Santorini. Where are you from and how many guests are you looking to have? My wedding was in Boston and my guests spent almost as much on their hotels as we spent on our honeymoon hotel in Santorini. So price is a little relative, although your money will go further in other parts of Greece. I find food and transportation to be cheap in Greece, even in Santorini. I’ve vacationed in much more expensive places.
Weather is also a consideration as others have stated. We went early June and it was hot during the day but cooled down at night. We had two nights of extreme wind. As you get into July/August it heats up a LOT. September is the best time to go to Greece in my opinion, weather-wise.

We are in Colorado, but all of our family and friends are in California. Flights are about $1000-$1500 if guests fly into London and take a regional flight to Greece. It is definitely way more expensive to fly directly to Athens – aprox $2000+. We estimate that we will have a minimum of 20 guests, with a max of 30, so it will be a small wedding.
We were only thinking about having it in June or July because fiance’s immediate family are almost all teachers. He is also going back to school in August of next year, so summer is the best time for us. We definitely don’t want unbearingly hot weather, so I guess early June will be the best time weather wise. We also understand that it will definitely be more expensive to have a wedding in the summer regardless of where we are at.
Rachel Jennie :
Do you have any recommendations? We don’t have any ties to Greece and only considered it because future Mother-In-Law brought it up when we mentioned that Italy might be too expensive. One of my main criterias for a Destination Wedding country is that I don’t want to have a beach wedding, so nothing tropical.
Edit: I have been looking at venues in Crete and they are beautiful! I have contacted a Crete wedding planner, so hopefully they’ll reply back to me soon so I can get an idea of how much venues cost in Crete. Hotels in Crete also don’t cost much either (anywhere from $150-$300 a night) and they look so nice too!

are you paying for your guests’ flights and hotel stays?

We just booked our honeymoon to Athens for April 2018. all research we’ve done says it’s safe. You have your normal crap that goes on, then the stuff you will never prepare for. But if you wait for life to be perfect you will never do anything.

Santorini is going to be insanely expensive at that time of year. I don’t see how a budget of $15k would be possible there, and you’re also asking a lot of your guests because hotels and Airbnb prices will be crazy high since that’s their high season.
If you’re set on Greece, I would look into getting married on a less touristy island. We honeymooned in Milos in July/Aug (just a few weeks ago), which was still way more expensive than Athens but didn’t touch the prices we saw in Santorini. There are also beautiful parts of Greece in the mainland, like the town of Nafplio in the Peloponnese (not too far from Athens). I was there about 10 yrs ago, and it was one of my favorite places in all of Greece. It’s a beautiful seaport town that goes up into the mountains.

I am having my wedding next May in Santorini. I will say that you will have a difficult time planning a wedding there, it is a very expensive island and most wedding venues and hotels/accomodations book out really far in advance. I know that in late May when I was trying to book my venue for next year, they only had availability for 1 day in all of 2018.
I’d take a look at the islands around Santorini, they will be cheaper. Also check out Croatia or Spain for beautiful but cheaper weddings. I heard Portugal is amazing for weddings as well!
I also suggest reaching out to a lot of different wedding planners/companies in the are you want to go to, and get a feel for their prices. They can range quite a bit.

kristin36890 : nothing so far! We booked the venue and the photographer as per my planner, she said those get booked up the fastest. But in terms of everything else she said we will start the planning in November. I’m with Poema Weddings.
How’s yours?? I don’t even have a dress yet do you?
