What do you guys think of Greece expeling one of their track and field athletes from the Olympic Games in London over a tweet that she posted?
Article here for those who haven’t seen it: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/greece-expels-olympic-athlete-over-144432607–oly.html
Personally, I really don’t see her tweet as the racist comment that it is being made out to be. If a comedian said something similar, we’d all laugh. To me, this seems to be a case of how so many people are too overly sensitive and looking for racisim around every corner.
What do you think? Do you agree with kicking her off the team or should she be allowed to still compete?

ehhhhhhhhhhhh I am so fed up with political correctness and people looking to get offended at the smallest things………………but I think this was pretty tasteless.

@Mrs.KMM: I agree with you but at the same time, she has political leanings that I think played a huge part in Greece’s decision to remove her from their team.
Edit: It was a dumb thing to to say just so I don’t downplay that part of it.

I think we should be happy we live in the US and not a foreign country. Obviously, this wouldn’t have got an American kicked off the Olympic team but obviously is does in Greece! While a lot of people in the US complain about some things going on politically, at least we have free speech.

@IUrebekah3RT: actually, I bet if an American had said it, they’d be booted.

I did read in an article that with all the economic issues Greece is facing, much of their Olympic program is sponsored by foreign groups so it was probably a rash move to avoid losing funding. and the point of the Olympics is that it is a diverse, international meeting of athletes. not just white people.

I think it sets a great example. Most people would be shocked at how xenophobic most Europeans are and that her type of comment and worse are seen as totally normal.
@IUrebekah3RT: I don’t think free speech is great if it’s used to spread hatred.

i bet an american would have been expelled also. it’s an incredibly tasteless joke. they need to remember they’re representing their country as a whole, not just there to win a medal.

I will agree that the joke is pretty stupid, but I don’t see it as racist. And I also don’t see it as worthy of losing your spot on the Olympic team over. Would I post the same thing? No. But the reaction seems excessive to me.

I almost posted about this but then got scared of backlash! I guess I don’t fully understand the racist implications of the tweet. In general it seems like a bad attempt at a joke, and not something meant to be malicious. I don’t know much about what is going on in Greece right now, but if there were negative undertones about immigration I guess I get it, but it is hard to say that is the case. Getting kicked out of the olympics seems extreme to me.

I think a lot of people forget that these Olympic athletes are typically very young and (other than superior athletic talent) are typical young people. They’re not expert statesman trained in diplomatic relationtions.I understand that some people think they should be held to a higher standard than an average person, but I also think it’s important to remember that people in their teens and early twenties do and say stupid stuff like this and worse all the time. Personally, I think many of these athletes need more guidance in diplomacy and social media.

It’s a pretty tasteless joke and unworthy of an “Olympian.” I think Olympians are suppose to signify the best of your country and also the concept of racial and international harmony in the name of sports and competition.
Was the punishment harsh? Yeah it was. Maybe a little too harsh, and I feel bad for her because it was a childish mistake. But when an Olympian goes to compete in the Olympics, they are not just representing themselves, but their country too. So in that sense, I can understand why Greece did what it did.

That’s how I viewed it too.

I was wondering if this was going to come up in a thread today.
I think it’s BS that she got booted off the team. I think a lot of people saw “African” and automatically read “black” and got all offended.
