Airfare, especially using miles and discounted sites is so tricky! You just never really know what will be available and what won’t even a day from now, let alone months from now.

To be totally safe, you’ll need to book through United at full price now and book the other ticket through miles. Another (riskier) option is to book with the miles on the flight you want now for the one ticket, and just wait for your discount site to (hopefully) have the seat you want available in a few months.

As for seating, I’ve found that United is one of the worst airlines for changing seating after you have booked. They usually let you choose your seat at the time of booking (not sure how it works on sta.com) and then you have to wait to make any more changes until 24 hours before your flight. If you are a United Mileage Plus member and booked using your number, then you might be allowed to change seats after booking. I’d recommend just calling the airline’s customer service number and asking what happens if you book through them for one ticket and on points for another, how does seating work?

Finally, considering that United is a Star Alliance member you are actually able to use United points on any of the Star Alliance airlines that fly to your destination. It’s usually much trickier than booking directly on the United website, but you can often stretch your points much further. Not knowing how many points your awesome grandma is giving you, I’m not even sure that would help.

Flyertalk.com is a forum that has great advice for using and maximizing points.

Sounds like a great HM! I went to Greece a few years ago. We did Athens, Santorini and Mykonos. I loved Athens and Santorini was parasise. Mykonos was a little party-party for me, but that might just be where we stayed! I also loved taking the ferrys from island to island because I love being on the water.

Also, I second the flyertalk.com reccomendation. Using miles is sooo tricky! I would say try to book two asile or window seats and then Im sure you can get someone in a middle seat to switch with you. If you see a miles seat avaliable, grab it ASAP as they dont release that many.

Have fun!

@nikole.powell.np:  We stayed in Tolo for about two and a half weeks, which was nice because we really got to know the locals. We did a lot of day trips from there. We ended the trip with 3 days in Athens. My favorite city was Delphi (which we visited while we were going from Tolo to Athens). It had a lot of good ruins (not sure if thats what you’re going to greece for, but that was the main interest for me) including the temple of Apollo, which you could get pretty close to. Corinth was also very interesting. My absolute favorite museum was the acropolis museum in Athens, because it has glass floors so you can see the ruins that it is built on top of. We spent 4 hours in there, but easily could have spent a couple days. Most of the cities we visited are not on your itinerary, but we skipped a lot because it was too far from our home base and we did not have a ton of time. Another city I really enjoyed was Olympia, because there was so much that you could walk through. Though I wish we spent more time there, because we drove a couple hours each way and then didn’t have very much time actually there. We also spent a fair amount of time in Napflion, but I think that was more out of convenience because it was only 20 minutes away from Tolo. You can PM if you have more questions 🙂
