My daughter spent 10 days in Santorini, on her honeymoon. They were drawn by the swimming pool in a cave, in their hotel suite.
I told them to go to Italy, especially since my son in law is half Italian. If they had to do it over again, they would have gone to Italy. A return to Florence, is on my bucket list.

Sorry but Greece has the same (at least) history as Italy. We are talking about one of the oldest civilizations on Earth. And Greece ALSO has lakes, rivers, beaches, mountains, spas, great hotels and food. Pls do your homework before suggesting…. As far as safety is concerned, economic crisis hasnt turned Greeks into robbers or murderers. Especially since you re heading to places merely for vacation. No one is going to hurt you at a hotel or beach. My mother was robbed in her car in Bari, Italy 20 years ago. That doesnt mean all Italians are thieves…..So, pls suggest a place based on your experiences and not rumors.
Now to answer your question, both countries are similar. Both have places to die for, significant culture and nice food. It depends on what you like most and what price offers you get (unless you dont have a tight budget)

vally88: Well said.
If we went to italy i know that we would want to go to venice/tuscany/rome, and then maybe head south. would you have any suggestions on beaches? I think I am having a hard time comparing the two places because I am familiar with the beaches in santorini, mykonos and nexos…but dont know where to look for Italy, or what our itinerary for 3 weeks would look like.

KB87: Well Im not Italian and personally would like to visit the same as you (Venice, Tuscany, Rome). So I can
t really help with Italian beaches. :/
(Btw, the authentic Greek culrure or history doesn`t lie in Mykonos nor Santorini, but what suits the visitor…) :p

KB87: Mykonos and Athens. In Mykonos we went snorkeling, jet skiing, kite boarding and had so much fun. The water is so clear and beautiful. The little city was gorgeous and we ate so much yummy food. Athens was just quick stop didn’t do much there besides historical. I want to go try other Greek islands.
In Italy I’ve been to Rome twice, the historical stuff was fun but the city is so dirty and transportation was a nightmare. Venice was a bit nicer minus the smell lol. Milan I was sick so don’t remember much lol.
We’re planning our Europe honeymoon too. I think we’re doing Spain. Been to Barcelona and want to go back and to Madrid. And maybe Paris because I’m a sap for it and have been twice but never with an SO. I love museums too. Plus it’s a few days where I live off of baked goods and wine lol.

Thanks for the response! I did a full 3 weeks in Spain a few years ago. I Would highly recommend checking out San Sebastian in Spain…. google it. awesome place It had the best food in all of Spain, and it is so romantic!!! If you are active there is also a great beach for surfing as well. I loved it there!
