My fiancé and I have picked a gorgeous place to get married. The only downside is its pretty far from civilization. It is a lodge, so food and lodging is easy. But the cake…how do I handle the cake? There aren’t a lot of bakeries around, but luckily we want a simple (I think) cake. I’m thinking a grocery store bakery is going to be my only option. Am I realistic it will look good? Can others show me pictures of their grocery store cake?

If it’s a specialty grocery store? Sure, why not. We have a local market that does AWESOME cakes. The quality is actually better than a lot of the local stand alone bakeries.
That being said, I used to be a cake decorator for Safeway. I wouldn’t go that direction. I made weddings cakes. I put a lot of effort into the cakes I made because I knew they would be important. That being said, it was safeway and the entire day we’d be getting berated/put down/paid very little, so nobody had souls. I was literally the only decorator at my store who gave a crud. My manager? Thumb in the cake while moving it? No problem (we wore gloves, so it just looked ugly.) Crooked a little? Meh. My supervisor? Crumb icing? Nah! Ain’t nobody got time for that. Chocolate crumbs in the buttercream? Whatevs!
I’m not saying all stores would be like that, but remember the decorators at chain grocery stores get paid very little and are expected to do quite a bit.

I didn’t do this, but A Practical Wedding has featured turning grocery store cakes into pretty wedding cakes a couple times:
And the couple at Young House Love did grocery store cupcakes for their wedding:
I think it’s a great idea to do something a little simpler.

Here’s mine! The grocery store has a pretty nice bakery, but don’t do fondant or anything too crazy. But the cakes taste AMAZING.
(The crazy looking dinosaurs I made. And the ribbon around the bottom of each tier I provided)

Like you, I’m getting married far from civilization. It’s a super small town. My FI’s cousin got married last summer, and family is pressuring us to get our cake where she did… Food City. I’m terrified.

I am not a huge fan of cake, so the cake was very low on my list of priorities. We chose a grocery store cake because it was within our budget, tasted delicious and it was the only place that would put picures on our cake. It may not have been the prettiest looking cake, but it was exactly what I wanted.

Here are mine! I got them from Wegmans, a high-end grocery store chain on the East Coast. One of my BEST decisions in regards to the wedding! I did “taste” tests of the various cakes Wegmans regularly offered and narrowed it down to this one. Yum yum! They were raspberry lemon flavor, came with lemon curls, white chocolate curls, and raspberries on the top, and then I topped the main cake with a solid layer of fresh raspberries. They were amazing…the flavors were out of this world, they were moist and delicious, everything a wedding cake SHOULD be! Everyone RAVED about the cakes!
I bought 7 cakes for $140 total and I think I used 6 cakes for the actual wedding.
