- Wedding: June 2011
So, for my groom, I had hoped to get a phone call or letter from his favorite childhood baseball player Ryne Sandberg (Chicago Cubs).
He has since retired, been inducted into the Hall of Fame, and is managing a minor league team in Philly called the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. I sent a very sentimental letter to the ballpark along with a wedding invitation, I emailed the CEO of the ballpark, and the Owner of the team. I got responses from both the CEO and owner assuring me that they would pass along the message.
Much to my suprise, I got a package in the mail yesterday with Ryne Sandberg’s name in the return address! My heart was pounding.. and when I opened the box, there was a letter from his secretary, saying he gets lots of fan requests, and regrets that he couldn’t send a personal note, and an autographed bobblehead.
The bobblehead did say “Congrats (Mr. R), Ryne Sandberg, HOF (whatever year)”.
I know the bobblehead will make him smile, but I can’t help but feel a little let down. I bought him an autographed ball a few years ago.. and I just really really really really really wanted something a little more meaningful and personal.
His father passed away last year, and he won’t be there to straighten his tie, give him a pat on the back.. or the pep talk that dads give, you know? The two of them bonded over baseball and watched Ryne religiously together. I would have loved to have a “good luck today, don’t run” sort of letter that he could open just before he walks down the aisle.
