Yay! An Ajax bride! I’m just 15 minutes West of you at the Pickering/Scarborough boarder! Unfortunately, I’m not nearly as far along in the planning!

Hey Frugal Bride! Do you guys have an idea of where you want to get married or have you booked a place yet? I’m starting to learn where some vendors are in Durham, we stuck to people mostly in York Region because that’s where we’re from originally, and they’re close to our venue.

Haha, we’re actually doing the opposite. We’re currently living more West than we want to be, so we’re planning our wedding in Durham.
We’ll most likely be holding the reception at Tosca Banquet Centre.
Our ceremony will be at St. George’s Anglican Church in Oshawa. Originally we were planning to be married at All Saints in Whitby, where Fiance was a server and baptised, but with the fire in December it’s not expected to be repaired in time! St. George’s is an ok substitute, it’s FI’s regimental church.
Our flowers will be done by Audrey’s Flowers in Scarborough who has been taking care of our families floral needs for years.
Our photographer is Duet Event Photography, from Toronto.

We are getting married and having the reception at Inn on the Twenty in Jordan which is absolutely beautiful and so far they have been really good to work with. They also have amazing food.
Flowers: The Watering Can in St. Catharines. They have been really helpful. Mr.Stormy and I researched which flowers we wanted extensively and went in all excited about being prepared, only to find out that nothing we picked was in season! Luckily for us, they were able to make alot of very good recommendations.
Dress: Marilee’s in Fonthill.
Hair: Mandy Wilson. I have my trial this Saturday but she has been very pleasant over the phone.
Makeup: The Spa on the Twenty. I also have this trial on Saturday.
Photographer: Todd D. MacKinnon. He did our engagement photos and is absolutely amazing! He seems to really care about his work. He is also reasonably priced compared with the others in the area.
Rings: Peoples, Eaton Centre in Toronto. This is really the only vendor I have anything negative to say about. We were supposed to get our rings in two weeks. It has been two months. We asked them to order our sizes WITHOUT having them engraved first so that we can make sure they fit. Sure enough, one was engraved and was the wrong size. Stuff happens so I wouldn’t not have been that bother by it, but it happened a second time and the engraving work (which they said it was done by a computer) was the worst I have ever seen. It was sloppy and lopsided. The poor saleswoman who seemed very frustrated at this point (she had nothing to do with this, she had written the instructions down very clearly both times) has now insisted that we order another ring and start from the being. We were supposed to get them on Tuesday but never got a call. We are going to stop by tomorrow and if they aren’t in, we are just going to cancel it so that we have time to find others.

Kind of GTA-ish. We’re getting married in the Hamilton area and are using primarily Toronto and Niagara vendors.
Ceremony: St. Paul’s United Church, Dundas
Reception: Hamilton Golf and Country Club, Ancaster
Dress: Ritche, Toronto
Flowers: My Bouquet, NOTL
Cakes: Criveller, Niagara Falls
DJ: Maximum Music, Toronto
Photographer: Edison Photography
Photobooth: Soapbox Photo and Video Booths, Toronto
Decor: Simply Beautiful Decor, NOTL
I have yet to figure out who will be doing hair/makeup – I suppose I should get on that soon!
@ marlew – We’re date twins!

So excited!!! It’s all coming together!

@Stormy – I’ve heard Inn on the Twenty is AMAZING. Your wedding is going to be great! It’s so beautiful down there, I’m totally jealous!
@Bakerella – Thanks! They don’t seem to do as much advertising as the other venues in that area so I nearly missed finding them. Your wedding is going to be great as well, I have seen some really nice pictures of the Alton Mill.

@hergreenapples – I am considering booking maximum music too! Who is your DJ? What helped you choose them?
@yes – We don’t know who are DJ is yet – they don’t assign then until closer to the date (we’re still six months out).
Honestly, I did not follow a very scientific process. I saw them at the bridal show in Toronto and ended up checking out their website and being generally impressed by their level of organization and the testimonials I read.I also liked the idea that they had such a large group of DJs, so if mine couldn’t make it on the day of the wedding there would be a back up. Oh, and I liked that it seemed like a bigger, professionally run business rather than some guy working out of his mom’s basement!
Once I started emailing them (Allison Mossman has been my main contact) I found they were incredibly professional. Allison always returns emails almost immediately. They’re very willing to work within our parameters and they work very closely with the bride and groom to ensure they are giving you exactly what you want (especially when it comes to the degree to which the DJ is involved at the reception).
Oh, just a tip, I prepaid in full with them in order to avoid the HST (this saved over $100).
Good luck, whoever you choose!

@hergreenapples – thanks for the response!
I also exchanged a lot of emails with Allison, she is so fast! (:
I visited their location to talk with a DJ who will most likely be the one at our wedding. I liked the guy, but I was unsure because I haven’t been to any wedding since I was a kid (everyone I know is either single or has been married for a long time!) so I did not really know what I was looking for. It’s always nice to hear someone else is using a vendor you are considering. (:
Good tip about the HST BTW! Thanks!
@bakerella – I am SO jealous you will have stillmotion for photography. They are so amazing, I wish I could comfortably afford them, I especially love their videos, they are so polished. I think I will end up going with Azure Blue for photos..I like their style too.

I wonder, has anyone gone with Joseph and Jaime wedding photography? They are my fav, but out of our budget.
@Mrs C – Check out Pink Twig. They’re really great about working within budgets and being realistic about what flowers are available when. I had other florists say “Sure sure I can get you that…” whereas Tanya at Pink Twig woud tell me “okay fine, but it’ll cost you $15 a stem at that time of year and it’s not really worth it, you have other things to spend your money on”. I appreciate her honesty! A good friend of mine uses them frequently for work functions and is always amazed when she gives them a budget of say $2000 but when she walks into the room it looks like $10 000 worth of flowers. They have great ideas and are great at maximizing your budget!
@yes – Stillmotion was totally my splurge. Justin shot my friend’s wedding a couple years ago before he joined Stillmotion and I’ve had him bookmarked since I saw her photos. We’re doing our engagement shoot next weekend and I’m SOOOOOO excited! I’m dying to add a video to our package but I think Fiance would kill me if I spent more money at this point, LOL!
As far as DJs go, as a heads up we met with S4 Sound Systems and I didn’t like them at all. I hit it off with them at a wedding show, they seemed to really “get” what we were looking for, but when we met them at their office later to potentially book, the girl kept talking about how Fiance shouldn’t be drunk at the altar because I’ll get mad and how many times she’s seen it happen. And then she went on about all the drinking games we could play at our wedding for our kissing game, etc etc. It was really weird. We’re just not that kind of people and that was really clear, so I don’t know what she was thinking. I’m still in shock about that one.

Double yay for GTA weddings.
@stormy- thanks for the feedback on the Peoples at the Eaton Centre, we were going to get my FI’s ring from there for the sake of convenience, but they haven’t impressed us so far. We’ll try and find another Peoples GTA location or maybe see what the guy who made my ring quotes us.
@hergreenapples – also thanks for sharing your photobooth info. All the other few ones around the GTA are pricier (from what I recall) and this one *may* fit in our now super-tight budget.
@Mrs_C – I’m super curious as to how the Cheese Boutique is involved with your cake situation? My Fiance and I love that store, but I don’t get the connection.
Ceremony: St. Francis of Assisi, downtown Toronto
Reception: Palais Royale
Dress: Vera Wang
Photos: 5ive15ifteen, although I’m waffling
Videography: Samo Films
Make-up: A friend who does wedding make-up on the side.
Hair: Still looking, any recommendations ladies? I have wavy, slightly frizzy hair (when I don’t put product or blowdry it straight of course) and I’m looking for a big/medium loose curls type of look.
Cake: TBD, likely Dufflets and we’re doing something pretty basic…two-tier, top is chocolate-banana cake and the bottom is carrot cake (my fave). We both don’t love cake, but the Fiance especially. My mom is insisting we have a cake to cut, so since I love the carrot cake at Dufflet’s we’re just going there. The Fiance doesn’t mind their chocolate-banana cake, but he’s not looking forward to it. It’s about $200, as we’re getting a basic included design, so that’s our price range really. Anyone have a great place for chocolate-banana cake…I’m easier to please than he is so I’m sure I could find something there.
Rings: TBD, most likely his at a Peoples and mine at a Birk’s to keep costs down….maybe using our engagement ring designer if he has a better price.
