Without knowing your budget I went cheap and checked out Forever 21. If you’re looking for something nicer, I love Dillards for dresses.

I love Adrianna Papell for formalwear – it’s classy and glamorous (in my opinion; the style is very classic which isn’t everyone’s style) with lots of sparkly options, and reasonably-priced

yogabride2018 :  what’s the weather like where you live in October and November? Are you looking for something with a sleeve or to wear a sweater with?

Rereading your post; maybe AP is too formal, though I’ve often worn it to weddings.

Anthropologie might fit the bill for you better – they have long dresses that are more casual, yet very romantic and beautiful

A print makes a dress feel a lit less bridesmaid-y. Something like this could go with a bright yellow wrap for early spring, mustard cardigan for fall, and dark grey cardigan/coat for winter.

In winter, you have an option of wearing black tights, so you could consider a knee-length dress, gives  you more variety.

It is 100% up to you…  But, I don’t know why you need to wear a dress.  I would wear black pants with black shoes and a black blouse and call it a day.  Its simple and you can’t go wrong.

If you do wish to have a maxi dress…  I’d still go for a dark color if not black itself.  If its slightly cool I’d throw on a light black sweater.  YOu can always throw on a little pearl necklace you can find almost anywhere, Sears, JCPenny, Dillards to dress it up.
