My friend’s girlfriend came to the end of our reception…so she had some drinks, but no food.  It didn’t cost us anything extra.  I didn’t know she had a girlfriend when I invited her, so she didn’t have a plus-one.

@smrlovingrl:  if they don’t show up til the last hour, why would you need to pay for them? I assume that dinner will be over by then and they’ll just show up for the dancing part?

How will it cost you money?

I think you should ask him to confirm, and then not count her in your count to the venue.

@smrlovingrl:  Agree with PPs… why would you pay for her after dinner is over?

@smrlovingrl:  Why can’t someone just show up late?  What’s your venue like?

@smrlovingrl:  I think it really depends on whether your venue charges you pp or whether it’s just the cost of the drinks that get consumed. She’ll probably just have a couple drinks, so if its the latter it shouldn’t make much of a difference.

@smrlovingrl:  I wouldn’t worry about it, and wouldn’t include her in your count.  Other people will have left by then so she can just “take their spot”

@smrlovingrl:  They will replace someone leaving the reception early no doubt so I wouldn’t worry about discussing it with the venue.  If they show up, there should be at least a few empty seats.  If not, then you didn’t go out of your way.

Is the guy a good friend? I would be really happy that my friend’s girlfriend tried really hard to be there to see us, regardless of when she showed up. I understand being concerned about the money, but you can always check with your venue. Tell them you need one less dinner, and see if it will change the cost.
