If he’s playing the guitar alone, all you need is the guitar tabs.  Unless the song has a really complicated guitar melody.  If it’s just chord strumming, tabs are fine.

No.  The tabs are just chords.  If the song has a melody that he will be playing, and not chords, you will the music for the vocals (the melody).

What is the song(s)? Some are going to be more difficult than others.  Was it originally meant to be played on guitar?  Are there lyrics as melody?

@baletrina:  You are probably better off getting the piano/vocal/chords version. Not all guitarists read tablature (i.e. “tabs”), but as long as there are chords he will have the basics, and if he’s singing he will need the vocal line as well.

Just FYI, be prepared that the guitar part he plays may not be exactly like the recorded version. The chords give the basic “outline” of the music, but the exact licks and flourishes on the recording may or may not show up in any given guitarist’s interpretation.
