Alright so…I need some help here. My wedding will literally be on the beach in the sand so I need some help figuring out what kind of shoes the guys should wear. My BMs and I are going barefoot but I know a lot of the guys would prefer to have something on their feet. I just don’t know what would be best for walking/standing in the sand. Sandals/flip flops are out because #1 my Fiance hates guys in sandals and #2 when you walk on the beach in flip flops it basically just sprays sand everywhere as you walk.
Ideas?

freckles071611: Sorry, I guess I should have stated that in my first post. Whoops! Anyway, they’re wearing khakis and short-sleeved white button down shirts. It’s a very casual wedding.

What about deck shoes (like Sperry Top-Siders)? We are getting married outside on the intracoastal, but not in the sand and that’s what the guys in our wedding party are wearing.

mrsyeti: I was going to suggest Sperry top-siders too!

Hmm, every guy I know who has gotten married on the beach has gone barefoot or worn Rainbow flip flops, but it sounds like those options are out. I can’t imagine any type of shoe that would be remotely comfortable after it’s filled with sand.

Cory_loves_this_girl: I wanted to have everyone barefoot but I mentioned this to a few of FI’s groomsmen and they really didn’t like that idea. Lots of guys have gross feet, so I get it. I just know they’ll be more comfortable with something on their feet. Plus, they’ll only be standing/walking in the sand for like 15 minutes. So after the ceremony they can easily dump the sand out of their shoes. Our reception is on a terrace overlooking the beach.
mrsyeti: ABL12490: Good call on the boat shoes. I like that idea. I think they’d look really good with khakis too!

Another vote for boat shoes. I would probably find it in your budget to pay for them though since it is a very specific type of shoe that not everyone wears on a daily basis.

I went to a wedding last summer on the beach and the guys were in Sperry Top Siders! They looked great, that’s my vote too.

Another vote for deck shoes. Another alternative could be espadrilles.

freckles071611: I potentially disagree that the bride & groom should buy the shoes. I think it depends on how specific you are (brown deck shoes vs. a certain style # of Sperrys, for example) and your group of groomsmen. In our group, they all do wear boat shoes on a regular basis with maybe one exception (lots of boaters and/or people who work in the boating industry). If OP’s group is like that, then I don’t think she should feel obligated to buy the shoes for them. And we just said brown deck shoes so they could get any brand/style they wanted (or wear a pair they already owned), it wasn’t like we specified Sperry Gold Cups. Plus deck shoes are cheaper than dress shoes, for example – and a lot of guys would probably have to go out and buy those if they work in a more business casual environment.

mrsyeti: Then maybe OP should just tell the guys to wear brown shoes. But to say “buy brown boat shoes” is pretty specific. My H would never wear them again. But he does have a pair of brown dress shoes (non-shiny) that would work fine. I think when you start requiring a specific style you need to front the money. But if you just say “brown shoes” then you are fine. It would be like asking your girls to buy “nude shoes” vs “nude, peep toe, sling back heels.”
So I will readjust my agreement with the boat shoes. They would be a good option, but I think telling the guys to wear brown shoes, and them knowing it is on the beach, will be just fine. Anyways between the sand and the long pants no one will really see their shoes that much.

Sanuks are great beach shoes but somewhat casual.

freckles071611: I don’t know if we’d tell them exactly what type of shoes to wear. Probably just say something like “brown boat shoes.” I don’t care if they’re all the same because they will barely be seen. As far as paying for them goes…we’re already paying for the guys’ shirts and khakis, so I think as long as I don’t make them buy a specific brand or whatever of shoe I think they can pay for these on their own. Also I think several of the guys will already have something that will work.
Thanks everyone for your help!
