I pay $10 a month at Planet Fitness– I love it! I pay month-to-month so I can cancel anytime and there’s always machines open.
I pay $30 a month for a membership to my local YMCA (and because I live in a metropolitan area with 3 facilities, I actually have access to all 3 for the price of 1). It comes with full facility access, including the pool, unlimited fitness classes, reduced pricing for personal trainers and advanced courses and the best part, a women’s only fitness center which I love. All YMCAs aren’t created equal, so you might find yours isn’t as great, but definitely check it out!
Otherwise, I know Planet Fitness has a great reputation and super low prices. Many of my friends have memberships there and love it.
i paid a year upfront for my last membership at xsport to get a “deal” and it was still $35/month. other people were doing $40. it’s 24 hours, machines, classes, pool, towels, etc.
but im at the point where im nervous about getting into a contract so i want an affordable option. ill def look into planet fitness!
I pay $10/month for Planet Fitness. There was a $1 start-up fee. That’s a promotion that might be ending soon though.
so what if i want to take a break between months? do i have to pay a restart fee?
do they have towels and classes?
DH and I just signed a 13-month contract. It comes out to about $34.60 a month for each of us, plus his credit card gave us 5% on it (yippee!) which makes the final cost about $33/month for access to all the machines, pool, gym (basketball, volleyball, etc.) and all classes that they offer.
ETA- also, your insurance might help cover a fitness membership if you go x number of times per month. I know a lot of people with BlueCross BlueShield get such a discount. Might be worth looking into.
i just looked up my local PF and it says $19.99. no fair!
Planet Fitness doesn’t have fitness classes, though they do have “classes” that teach you how to use different machines or get a workout– titled “Cardio”, “Arms”, “Legs”, etc.
My favorite thing is the 30-minute circuit– a circle of machines that are numbered and you go from 1-20 in 30 minutes, works out your whole body! I’m not good at jumping between machines without some guidances, so I like it! They also have an ab circuit but I haven’t been all the way through that one.
My place doesn’t have towels to my knowledge, but they do have lockers and showers. If you pay $20/month (with a 12 month minimum commitment) you get free tanning, red light therapy, massages, and half-price drinks. I’m considering upgrading for the massages and red light– no idea if it really works but I’m a sucker for good marketing.
(its not as bad as the club my mom works at… starts at $145 a month for a single membership)
I pay $30 a month for a small gym, it includes classes which I love and the atmosphere is much better than any other gym I have ever been in.
I used to go to planet fitness, and I honestly can’t recommend them. They are inexpensive however you get what you pay for. No group classes and depending on the location lines for cardio machines and tons of people to make your way through.
One tip: Any gym you are considering joining go at whatever time you are most likely to be working out at. This way you can see how busy it is and if you think you would be happy working out there.
