It’s that time of year! Darling Husband and I seriously considering joining the gym that we had previously purchased a two-month groupon through. The groupon expired on Christmas, and we met last night with them to get a quote.
Her original quote was $97/month (yikes) and Darling Husband and I got her down to $69 – (discount, plus paying upfront) plus, DH’s credit card is doing 5% back on health clubs right now, so we are down to $65.50/month after that. We were hoping to get it down to $50-$60, but don’t think that will happen. We are only considering a one-year contract.
The gym includes all the normal machines, swimming, any classes they offer, 4 meetings with a personal trainer, and a full 6-court gym (which was original reason for the groupon – so we could play volleyball in the winter.
Do any of you that have gym memberships think that sounds like a good deal? We’re hoping to go 3x a week.

Do you employers offer anything? I get a $10/month membership through my work, Darling Husband gets one too and his is $12.50/month.

Sounds like a deal to me (but Darling Husband and I pay $80+ a month without a pool.)

@MrsPinkPeony: Same. We pay $25 each per month, and it comes right off my paycheque. Here in Canada that’s actually pretty good…gyms in the States seem to be so much cheaper! We also had to join a national club as we go to visit family in other cities and wanted to be able to work out while we’re away….

@hisgoosiegirl: That sounds like an amazing deal to me, especially with all that stuff included.

I think that’s a good price but then again the pricing can be very regional.
Around here the Y is about $50/month for one person but again that depends on your income and the location of the Y. Goodlife is around $25 every 2 weeks, but also depends on the location (downtown is more expensive than in the suburbs but you can get a membership that gives you access to all the locations).
For 2 people that’s a good deal.

Your groupon is still good for the price you paid for it. Read the fine print.
We go to Golds Gym. We pay 20 a person (so 40) plus I just dropped it, but 10 for unlimited tanning.
Our school offers plus one memberships so we might switch to that, it’s 87 for the semester. Free for me because I’m going to school.

I pay $20 a month and it includes unlimited tanning at Planet Fitness. Can’t beat that! And I love it there.

We used to pay $80/month each (so $160 total) but I get a discount through my job now which makes it around $130/month total.
This is for a pretty standard gym in NYC (the one near our apt does have a pool) and it includes classes. We can also go to any location with our membership.

I think that’s a good price for 2 people, especially if there is no initiation fee. I’m now in LA fitness, formerly Bally’s and they charge close to $50 per month now. Thankfully, they accepted my discounted Bally’s rates and I pay $18/month but that’s after 10+ years of being with them.

Planet Fitness. 20 bucks a month includes; gym, massage chairs, red light therapy and tanning. You cant beat that!!!!

@gogogiraffes: really? I didn’t think it was….it was a two-month membership only – good for 60 days after activation.
Unfortunately, we can’t get anything thru work or insurance (the lady at the gym asked that too). My work has a separate ‘wellness’ system that works off of you reporting healthy eating and exercise which gives you points towards gift cards. So I would be able to record the exercise and get points for it, but nothing to directly reduce the cost.
I recognize that it is VERY dependent on your area, so I’m keeping an eye on people’s city/states and keeping that in mind.
Thanks for the input!

@agusia: yes – two people and no initiation fee. There is a $300(?) cancellation fee, but that’s why we’re only doing the one year.

I pay 45 a month and that includes- all their machines, any classes they offer (they have a yoga studio, cardio studio and spin/cycle studio), indoor and outdoor pool, and a fitness assesment. I also got a free session with a personal trainer. It’s a huge facility and I thought it was def. worth what it cost.

@hisgoosiegirl: Definitely a good deal! I wish I could get that here!
