I am contemplating joining the local YMCA to move along in my quest to lose body volume/weight. I have delayed my fall wedding to spring giving more time to fit in the dress I bought off the rack. ( not realizing just how much I have to lose!). Some of my friends are shocked at the cost other say its worth every penny. $55 for my FI and myself. $33-40 for 2 months Zumba classes.

@Cammotwin: $55 for two people is incredibly low. like, incredibly. but then, i don’t know about the YMCA and its features. Gold’s here, the lowest-price gym (though the Y might be cheaper, I don’t know) is $40 a month for their student rate, like $50 for a regular rate, per person. the gym i work at ranges from $90-$110 per month, per person, though it’s the nicest gym in this area. when i quit the gym my rate will be $86 per month for myself at a ‘former employee’ rate.

Basic membership is $10 and VIP (which just adds classes and tanning) is $15 per month. Sign up fee is usually $29,but mine was free because of a special they do every summer.

I pay $150/ mo for my CrossFit gym.

I pay $19 per month no contract. However, gyms are really cheap here!
My last membership (back home in a mid-size Canadian city) was $32 a month as a former employee. The regular rate was $45.
I would shop around, but really $55 for 2 people is quite good. I would just try and find somewhere that had classes included.

@Cammotwin: Planet Fitness Black Membership is my area was on special for $20 a month, no down payment and no annual fee so long as you pay for 12 consecutive months ($60 cancellation fee if you cancel before 12 months.)

What? You guys are so lucky!!! Memberships are really expensive in Canada, especially for the chain gyms with decent amenities. I joined a private one once and never really went because I didn’t like the facilities.
I was getting a “corporate discount rate” of $25 – every two weeks! Plus 13% tax and no towel service! Later on, we were informed of a better rate that was $375 for the year, I think, so that works out to just over $30/month (including towels).

I use the local community centers and have a pass that gives me access to all of them for jut under $40 a month. I think it’s seven or eight facilities, and I get entrance to all of them and unlimited drop in classes.

I belong to a gym called Fitness 19 .. depending how much you pay for your orignal “membership fee” determines your monthly payments. I paid $70 upfront, then I pay $18 a month. My gym doesn’t have anything fancy.. it has free weights, 15+ weight machines, a bunch of treadmills, elipticals & stationary bikes. But that’s all I need/want. They do offer free babysitting, I think that’s a nice thing to have! One thing I really I really like about my gym is it’s no contract, I can quit at anytime!

My individual YMCA membership was $36/mo, and our family membership rate is $65/mo.

It’s $30 at my Gold’s Gym for my Husband’s account, but as long as I go with him then I go for free as well. It’s quite the deal.

@Cammotwin: I see you are in Pgh, as am I….LA Fitness is pretty cheap, which is where I had a membership for a couple years back when I was doing the gym thing. When I left a couple months ago it was $20 per month, and you could add additional members for 5-10 bucks more per month (I think). I don’t know where in Pgh you are, but in the South Hills there are two that are both really nice. They both offer classes – yoga, Zumba, etc – and both have pools.
Good luck in your journey!

YA the last gym I was at was 88 / mo for Fi and I with my corporate discount. No towel service or anything. It had a pool which I liked.
If i join the one in our little town it’s 397/yr on the corporate discount. Nothing fancy.

I don’t know of any other gyms besides Curves within 30+ min of my house and time is a major consideration for making it a every other day or so thing. I can’t spend 2+ hrs a night. I drive past the Y and its only 3 min from my house. I guess that can count as a discount… it won’t take my much gas back and forth. Any other gyms would be $8 more a trip. My FI keeps saying he wants to tone up and lift (and learn to swim for a vacation someday.) I think Zunba classes would be better with instructor than in the basement on DVD.

$16.99 for LA Fitness and it is about 2 miles from my home.
