OK, Bees — educate me here! This is the first time I’ve heard of a Gypsy/Roma wedding. I did a little google image search and it seems like these brides choose extremely huge wedding gowns (loads of skirt/tulle) and large beauty queen type tiaras. What more am I missing?
Fill me in … my curiousity is piqued!

I think they are also called “traveller” weddings. At least that is what I have heard them referred as. I am not sure what they are, really though!

They are magical, in a word.
The traveller (gypsy, roma, etc.) community in Ireland takes weddings very seriously. They are all devout Catholics, and the people get married very young, like the average age is 16. These girls have been dreaming of their dresses for years and years and years and they are extravagant, in a word. Most of the guests dress promiscuously in my opinion, but it’s the culture of the community.
I would highly suggest watching the documentary, it’s amazing, and there is a lot more going on in the community than just big dresses and child brides. this is the link to the first part of the doc: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16lMiMcZf4s

I’d just like to point out really quickly that the Irish Travellers are a distinctly separate group from the Roma, otherwise known as the gypsies. Irish Travellers have a history that began in Ireland, whereas the Roma came out of northern India about a thousand years ago. In most Roma traditions, dresses like the Travellers stereotypically wear for their weddings would be considered quite obscene. The lower half of a woman’s body is considered unclean in Romani tradition, so something as revealing as many of those dresses would just be dirty.

@eliwhit: I just watched that documentary and it was really interesting! I’ve known of Traveller/Gypsy weddings for quite a while but never knew anything about their culture. Thanks for the link 🙂

Yes, thanks for that link. Very interesting documentary. I’ve seen their wedding gowns on here in numerous posts, but it was great to get to learn about weddings from their perspective.

I just watched the 6 part docu.
Very interesting. They seem to have very high morals and it’s sad that they get discriminated against.
