When I had a root canal it was a breeze. It was actually better than getting a filling.

I would have stopped them and asked for another shot if the anesthesia was not doing it’s job.

Did they prescribe you any pain killers? When I had mine done, they prescribed me Motrin and Vicodin; I only took the Motrin. (I took 1 Vicodin and it made me very loopy, so I didn’t take any more, but I didn’t need it either.)

I’ve had a root canal and it too was a breeze. I was so surprised because all you hear are the horror stories. If you didn’t have complete numbness your dentist should have provided better or more anesthesia.

I had a root canal and afterwards by mouth was sore, but I think it was mostly from the shots. The pain prior to the canal was pretty horrible. I would recommend taking some Advil. You could try putting a warm washcloth over that side of your face. I did that and it helped soothe the pain. I just got a washcloth wet and put it in the microwave for about 10 seconds. If you are still in a lot of pain after 24 hours and taking Advil, you could call and check with the dentist.

Ibuprofen helped me the most with tooth pain.  But I was taking large doses of ibuprofen before the root canal because I had a lot more pain before the root canal. Things felt much better after that pesky nerve tissue was removed for me.

They did prescribe you an antibiotic right?

@SoCoBlue:  They should have given you antibiotics. Call the doctor.

@SoCoBlue:  Oh no!  I’ve been there.

I had one about a year ago, and the douche endontist who did mine drilled too far and went through the tunnel where the root ends.  That sounds like what happened to you, too.  I was on the phone with them the next day because I could barely see straight from the pain and they didn’t seem to think it was a big deal and told me to take some advil.  The pain subsided in 2-3 days.  IF, however, this is what happened to you (it isn’t uncommon), you may need to have it drained at a later date.  A year later, I can still feel pressure on that tooth because there is pus built up underneath but damned if I’m going back to that guy, and I’ve already had my permanent crown put on (the pain is mild and occasional).

@irishphoenix:  I never had antibiotics with my root canal either. And add me to the list of people who thought it wasn’t as bad as a filling!
