So I have recently asked my regular hair stylist to possibly be my stylist on the day. I am having my wedding in another city than where we are from, so would be paying for a one night hotel stay for her. I’m very excited because we are somewhat friendly as well, and tend to occasionally hang out in the same friend circles. I was excited, that is, until I heard her price.
She wants to charge 100 for hair, and 50 for make up.
Is this normal, or am I just cheap?! I really thought it would be around 100 for both hair and make up. Usually when I go to her salon for FULL highlights, cut, and style, its around 175 with tip, and that takes about 3.5. hours!! So why is it so expensive to put a few pins in some hair and slap on some make up??
I originally wanted to pay for my bridesmaids as well as a nice gesture, but since I have four, that will cost me 600 on top of my own! crazy.
My other question is, do you TIP a wedding hairstylist? I know that when I go to a salon I tip 15-20%, but these are her flat rate fees, out of salon. I just don’t know the protocol on that. I wouldn’t want to not tip if I should be.
Any advice on this bees, would be appreciated!!

That sounds very reasonable to me. And I would definitely still tip.

I’m booking someone that doesn’t do my hair normally and she’s charging almost $275 for the day of (which seems to be lowish average aorund here). The trial was about half of that. So for your first question, I think it is regional but for my area, that would be considered a good deal. I think they charge that much because it’s kind of a lot of pressure as it’s not an event they can do over (plus wedding is the million dollar word, right?). Is she charging the same per person? Mine charges quite a bit less for the bridal party.
In addition, mine works for an existing “company” so I’m tipping her on top of that. Plus, I really like her. However, if your person is working on her own time and not representing her company (i.e. she is now the “boss”) then you don’t technically have to but it would be a nice gesture. I wouldn’t hold the hotel room against her since it is you that wanted to hire someone that’s not local.

That would be a steal for me – but I’m in the boston area, not canada.

Sounds like a decent price, but I see how it all accumulates since you’re paying for her accomodation as well. Is she worth it though?

That sounds decent to me and I’m in the Toronto area also

In Seattle, I would have paid $300-400 for onsite hair and makeup. I found an awesome salon with stylists who will go onsite to my wedding venue (90 mind and a ferry rude outside Seattle) for $95 hair $65 makeup, and we’ll tip 20%.

I’m having someone come to my hotel to do my hair and make up, mine is $150. The bridesmaids are $80. I think I’m getting a heck of a deal. Some of my other girlfriends paid a lot more for their weddings. Luckily this girl did makeup for another wedding I was in, I loved it and she does a free trial. I think that is a good price. I also planning on tipping her on top of that.

That’s a great price – my friend is giving me a discount on makeup (she doesn’t do hair), but her normal rate is $400 (for Chicago/land area). DO tip your stylist.
It’s not just “slapping on some makeup” for them, it’s a craft and an art. I’m glad I’m getting a discount (which is actually more than what your girl quoted you), but I understand her full price… you’re paying for the quality level of a professional.

That sounds reasonable.
I tipped both hair & makeup.artist as I would if I was in a salon.

I’m cheap, too. I think it sounds okay, maybe a little high for my area. You also have to factor in the cost of her having to travel, even though you’re paying for her hotel stay.

it is expensive to me, but not outrageous.
i’m having my regular stylist come to the house the morning of, and she’s charging $50 for an updo and $35 for a blowout. And my trial will be $50… I’m tipping on both.
I’m having makeup done through a cosmetics store, and they’re coming out for a $35 travel fee (10 mins away.. kind of bullshitty). They’re charging me $150 total for trial and day-of, and $65 for full face for everyone else. $35 just eyes, and $25 additional for false lashes

That would be a steal for me! I’ve been quoted $350-500 for my hair and makeup, and $100 for BMs hairs and $75 for their makeup…

“So why is it so expensive to put a few pins in some hair and slap on some make up??”
Because its a wedding and where ever the word “wedding” is concerned….the prices are jacked up!
And…she has to travel out of town.
