I’m having a hardtime looking for a Hair and Makeup artist so one of my friends introduced me to a salon and a make up lady. Below is the quote I got.
Hair trial: $120
The day of for hair: $350 + travel fee
Makeup trial: $150
The day of for makeup: $400
This is only for the bride and does not include the bridal party. The total is over $1k. Is it always this expensive or it’s regional?
Any San Francisco / Bay Area / San Jose bride, please let me know your thoughts and if you used anyone cheaper.

That price for the makeup made my jaw drop!
DO NOT pay that much.
I am from South Florida, I am a makeup artist, I know tons of high priced makeup artist in the industry and never have heard of a price that high! The trial price is usually what most artist charge for the bride for the actual day! Being in the industry I am lucky enough to have access to some of the top artist in my area, the girl doing my makeup for my wedding quoted me about $150 for the day of!
Do yourself a favor and SHOP around! I could not stomach someone paying that much.
Let me know if you have any questions!

@LindyC: wish you were in my area!
I worry that if I go for cheaper hair and makeup they might not do a good job.
Is there a way to tell a good hair and make up from bad hair and make up? I looked at portfolio and not sure if they’re good or it’s because they have good looking bride and photography.

Far too expensive! I’ll be paying around $600 for hair and makeup including all the trials and that’s in London where everything is super pricey.

Wow, that’s way too expensive!! I am paying about $200 for the day of hair and make-up, and the same for my trials!

WOW! This sounds like a case of jacking prices up because they hear the word “wedding”. Please don’t pay that much.
I hope someone in that area can give you a suggestion for someone else.

I know everything in California tends to be more expensive, but those prices you got quoted are WAY too high. I was also worried about finding the right hair/makeup people but I just went to WeddingWire, found the vendors with the most (and best) reviews, and started contacting the different people for quotes (I did this for every vendor, not just hair and makeup!). I found someone who has tons of excellent reviews, a really good website that shows plenty of examples of hair/makeup she’s done, she’s coming to our site where we’re getting ready, and it’s only costing me and my girls $150 each for hair and makeup, $75 for each service if only getting one, $10-20 for eyelashes, $55 for makeup trial, and $65 for hair trial. I think it’s crazy when hair/makeup people try to charge you more because you’re the bride, or charge travel fees on top of the hundreds they’re already charging you. Find someone who charges less and spend your $ on a pre-wedding spa day!

I paid only $35 for my make-up trial and $75 for my hair trial.
For the wedding I paid $55 for my make-up and $115 for my hair.
The prices you just mentioned made my jaw drop, too! Whoa! Keep looking!

Cheap makeup would be like in the double digits (not insulting anyone)
Most makeup artist for a bride charge from about $100-200. What they charge is usually based on how long they’ve been doing makeup and their experience and what the bride wants (air brushing, lashes etc.)
I use only MAC makeup on my brides, because I’ve been doing weddings for years and it looks the best in pictures and last the longest. There are so many quality lines out there though…and a great makeup artist can work with anything!
You are getting OVER charged if you pay $400. That is not based on doing a “better” job. I’ve know people who have even done celebrity makeup for weddings and did not charge that much!
You can find someone who does just as great for less. If you LOVE LOVE it and feel comfortable paying that much that is ok! Do you have a MAC store/counter in your area? I would reccomend going and talking to the girls/guys there…they freelance on the side and are true makeup artist, they are trained by the best and work for MAC so they are hired as artist not sales people. I bet if you did a trial run with them, and they came and did the wedding makeup for you it would be a lot less!!

Wow! That actually made me feel good about what I’m spending and I feel like I’m spending too much!

Whoa! That seems a little crazy to me. We’re using the most highly recommended makeup artist in our area, and her fee is $50 per person. Our hair stylist charges $85 for intricate up-dos but only $60 for styles that are half up/half down or full down.
Haven’t done trials yet but I’m sure they won’t be that expensive.
I say look elsewhere!

i’m getting a package done for $270 including air brush makeup trial on both makeup and hair and day of wedding makeup oh and fake lashes but then of course i’m in texas

@LindyC: Thanks for the info about MAC counter
@Pomapoo: Thanks for recommending Wedding Wire. I’ll check it out.
I agree with everyone, $1k+ for hair and makeup for one person for one day is rediculous.
My friend recommended those people because her sister used them for the wedding. I can’t afford that.

That is just crazy! I can’t even imagine. I’m pretty sure I won’t even be able to spend that much on my wedding dress!! I would definitely shop around. That seems waaaaaay high to me.

OMG! That seems really expensive to me. My hair trial was $30 and my hair + make-up on the day will be $80 total. I think you are getting ripped off. I would shop around.
