hi ladies,
i have long thick locs (i’ve been growing them for over 7 years). i’ve started and maintained them myself the entire time, so im a bit of a novice to natural hair salons (the last time i went to one was when i got my perm cut off!).
i haven’t had much luck finding photos of formal loc hairstyles for women with LONG locs. i have two photos and i’m not crazy about either style. I’m looking for a chic, simple updo – maybe a low textured bun slightly to the side, or something along those lines….anyone have photos or links to good styles?

Hey Harmonyeee!
I also have pretty long locs. They are currently in the middle of my back. My big conuncrum right now is how to figure out what I am doing with my hair. I put a few styles that I like on my personal blog
http://chicpersonalfun.blogspot.com/2009/01/hair-here.html
I am partial to the first one, but I am still trying to figure out what I’d like to do with my hair.
How do you usually style it? Also have you checked out the African American wedding hairstyles blog?

I envy you guys! I wish my locs were long again (this is my second set). I would pull it into a nice, elegant bun or chignon. But they’re just at shoulder length now so I’m not sure what my options will be come September!

My locs are just past my shoulder. I just went to a salon for the second time in 10 years! I had her cut them because I thought they were too long and I want to have a smaller neat, bun at the nape of my kneck.
I also have thought about making them curly and wearing it in a curly ponytail. I did that for my birthday and I thought it looked nice, I’m just not sure how it will look with my dress.
Are you ladies planning on doing your own hair or letting a stylist do it on the wedding day?

thanks for the insight ladies!
im planning to get mine done professionally…one one hand, i dont want to be up late the night before my wedding worrying about whether i’ll be able to get it right myself. but on the other hand, it seems ridiculous to pay someone over $100 to style my hair when i’ve been doing just fine all this time on my own!
thing is, it probably IS very much worth it to get it done professionally since i dont get too creative with my styles. i usually do a braidset after i wash and wear it curly for a few days, usually down, tied half up, or in a ponytail. i tend to focus more on the health of my locs and keep my styles pretty simple. so even if i can find a style i really like (caribqueen-i’ll be checking your blog out soon!), im not entirely confident i can pull it off on my own.

Would you believe that I have never done my hair myself since I’ve gotten locs? I have always known that I am pretty lazy about doing my own hair, BUT I do get them done like clockwork. I also try to get styles that will transition into something new. For example, this winter I’ve been having my stylist two-strand twist or braid my locs togethers and then about a week ot two later I take them out and have crimped locs like you harmonyeee.
As for the wedding, I’ve got an even bigger dilemma because I’ve got a late morning ceremony. I’m going to get my hair done next week and will be speaking to woman who does my hair a bit more about how to get it done. I may get it done later the Friday night and find a way to do something simple in the morning.
I’ll keep you ladies posted!

@caribqueen: Help!!! I have natural hair and I have no clue what to do with my hair. the wedding is in January so humidity is not an issue. I want to keep it kinky but I just don’t have a clue what style. Do you know of a good salon that styles natural hair but does not cost an arm and two leg. By The Way I live in Brooklyn.

I have locks down to my behind (12 years) and I am in the same delimma. My hair consultant has been battling with me on ways that she can do my hair (I only wear it in a ponytail). I am considering doing the pipe cleaners and an up style. but if any of you ladies decide to do something please post pics if possible.

@soon2bnixon: OMGmy osh! Pipe cleaner curls will be so nice!!!!! I have been growing my locs for 15 months and I they are just bearly touching the bottom of my neck. I am considering loc extentions b/c I want to waer my hair curled and swept to the side with a long ponytail with a flower.

Right now my locs are in a chin length bob so I’ll have to see where they are at come December. The plan for now is curly and swept to the side and I’m seriously considering just doing it myself (like I usually do) since the wedding is in the afternoon. The 2 times I’ve been to the salon since I started my locs 2.5 years ago I was NOT impressed!
