I had a hair trial done over the weekend. I can’t decide if I should book this hair stylist or continue my search. What do you guys think?
I wanted a romantic-looking side bun, like in these inspiration pictures:
This is what I got:
This is what it looked like later in the afternoon, after being outside in windy weather etc.:
I can’t decide if I like it or not.
When I saw the picture that the hair stylist took of the back, I hated it. I think it looks too stiff, too 90’s prom/glamour shot.
But, I like the way it looks in the pictures I took myself later on at home, after my hair had endured the outside windy weather for a full afternoon.
Should I stick with this stylist and trust that she can make some adjustments? I worry because she seemed to understand exactly what I wanted. She even showed me other pictures of low side buns in magazines. But, for some reason, that’s not what she gave me. Not sure if it’s because of a lack of ability or what? She also mentioned that she would use a different hairspray on the actual wedding day and that my hair would not move. At all.
Or should I try to find another hair person?

Wow, gorgeous! However, it seems like you gave her tons of inspiration pics and she said she understood and still couldn’t get that you wanted more soft and romantic than what she gave you. The style she gave you is lovely, but in your inspiration pictures I see more relaxed looks and some wispy pieces.
If you have confidence in her, then go back and trust her. However, if I were in your situation I would probably go to someone else and find someone who really does understand what to do to mimic the inspiration images.

Yeah, I think some of what you want got lost in translation…. the style she did for you isn’t as loose and romantic as the photos. It looks a little old-fashioned…it’s almost there but not quite. Sorry if that sounded mean 🙁

I don’t think you got what you asked for. While it is a beautiful hairstyle, it’s not loose enough to look like your inspiration photos, which I love more than your hairstyle. I think where she went wrong is with the bangs, they shouldn’t be seperated like that and she would have left some of your long hair out of the bun to wrap around the back to look more ‘loose’. Try someone else!

its too structured sweety very tight to the head, its beautiful but dont feel its what u wanted. you want it softer more romantic and floaty looking more red carpet than old fahioned bridal.you ended up with barrel curls instead of them curling the hair and arranging the curls beautifully.x

She did a good job on the up-do she gave you, but the problem is that it wasnt the style of up-do you wanted. It needs to flow more on the sides to give it texture. It needs to feel more effortless…. Romantic but a little undone. If she wasn’t able to capture that the first time, It makes me wonder if she can take direction. I always listen to my brides and give them the same feeling of inspirational pictures they bring. Granted they may not be exact, but you can evoke the same feeling. 🙂

I like the way it looks after it had been rustled with by the wind, ect. I’d keep looking though til you find someone who can give you what you picture. it’s your wedding day after all 🙂

@everyonelovespandas: I think some stylists just can’t manage loose hairstyles. I think it looks stiff. It seems to be resillient to wind/weather from what you posted but that’s not what you really want.

I think some stylists are so focused on making sure your hair is resilient to the elements, that they end up overdoing the hairspray and making the overall ‘do too tight. The style she’s done for you is not unattractive by any means, but it’s very formal and nothing like your original style brief. I much prefer the second photo, after it’s been wind-blown a bit!
If you have time to try another stylist, I would do that…and see if you can get samples of their previous work in the same style.
I also feel like with black hair (especially Asian hair, which I am guessing you have – and I have too) it’s sometimes harder to get that soft, romantic, slightly-tousled look because there is less texture in the colour (compared to non-Asian girls who often have softer hair with more complex hues).

@peonyinparis: @amberdk: I liked it after the wind had “messed” it up too!
Her portfolio of previous work showed that she had done more loose updos before, on similar hair, which is why I don’t get why she couldn’t do it for me. I think I’ll search for a new hair stylist.
She also did my make-up (which was really great!). Is it awkward to use her for make-up only (myself and bridal party) and not for my hair?

Maybe I’m totally off here, but how long is your hair when it’s down? It seems to me like it looks different from the inspiration pics because it’s bulker/stiffer. If your hair is long or thick, that could be why.

@lanalnoco: I think it looks bulkier/stiffer because of the huge amounts of teasing and hairspray she used. It’s usually not any different than the girl’s hair in the first inspiration picture. Actually, after she finished curling it (but before she did anything else to it), it looked really nice and flowy, so I think I can achieve that look. I hope!!
