Two years ago I found out that I had psorasis and had a huge flare up that lasted over a year. For those who don’t know what psoriasis is ita genetic auto immune disease where your immune system attacks its own healthy skin cells. It causes itchy red raised patches that flake because the skin cells are reproducing faster then the body can shed them. I had it the worst on my scalp and my hands and it took a little over a year to find the right cocktail of medications that would clear my skin.
Because of the inflamation to my scalp I lost about 40% of my hair. Prior to the flare up I had thick, dark, curly hair to my mid back and about 6 months in i chopped it to a shoulder length bob. My hair has since started to grow back to where it looks half way decent. The lower layer of my hair is growing and is past my shoulders when wet or straight, but the top layer at the crown is still only about 5 inches long and pretty choppy.
i am about 8 months out from my wedding and i can still barely put my hair in a pony tail much less an updo. i am looking into extensions for the wedding and I have no experience as far as how to go about
1) picking out the right type of extensions
2) Finding a salon/stylist that will put them in
3) How they will affect my scalp (i dont think i can use the glue)
4) How they will look once they are in against my real hair and comfort of wear
5) Staying with in my budget
So bees I’m looking to you to help me out with any information, tips, advice or do’s and don’ts. I’m in the Philly area if you have any recommendations for salons or stylists

chillybear, i’m sorry this has been a tough experience for you. i think plenty of hive members have used hair extensions–mrs. lemon, miss spaniel, and i think mrs. champagne did. i did a quick “hair extensions” search on the site and there were a ton of board posts as well, and i bet there is some good info in there. sorry i can’t be more specific, but i wish you the best of luck, there are lots of options out there and i’m sure you’ll find something to make you look and feel fabulous!

((Hugs)) Doll. It is so traumatic to lose your hair!
I lost quite a bit of hair last year due to stress . . . seriously (In the beginning, my docs thought I could have a tumor since I have had migraines since I was a kid and had recently lost about 10 pounds (a lot for me)), so finding out it was just stress was a huge sigh of relief!). It was mostly on the right side of my head, but it fell out centimeters from the roots, and it was almost all of the hair in the middle of that side of my head (does that make sense?).
Since I had hair on the top of my head (crown area) and still had hair on the bottom of my head (at ear level) one of the stylists in my salon that specializes in extensions made me a partial hair piece that clips in to my hair. I could wear it when I wanted to (like for work and evenings), but could take it out if I was going to the gym or just hanging around the house (or sleeping). Although I considered getting extensions for just that section of my head, I ultimately decided against it because (1) I didn’t want to have to go to the salon every few weeks for up-keep, and (2) because I didn’t want to risk damaging the hair that was trying to grow back.
Also, the partial piece was so easy to take care of (an occaisional wash) and easy to style, and when it got uncomfortable, I could just un-clip it and slide it out.
