I am so angry and upset. We are taking our engagement photos this upcoming Sunday and I decided to give my below waist-length hair a little trim and add some layers. I told the stylist to please KEEP THE LENGTH aka do not cut more than 2″ as I like having it long. Somehow 2″ turned into 5″ and i am devastated. There are no layers it’s just a short cut!!! My wedding is also in 8 months and now I can only hope my hair will grow back in time. I always envisioned wearing my long hair in waves and braided with my headpiece. Now it’s way too short it even falls out of a bun :(. I dont even know how to do my hair at this awkward slightly below-the-shoulder length for my photos this weekend. My hair is so thick and heavy that anything shorter than mid-back length puffs up. I dont know what to do. I dont feel pretty with this hair at all 🙁

Five inches will grow back really fast, you’ll see! You intended to lose 2″ anyway, so really you’re only 3″ shorter than you intended to be. I can totally understand it being upsetting now, but just keep reminding yourself that hair grows and in a very short period of time it’s going to be how you want it again. AND probably even more healthy and lovely from this unintended chop 🙂

@QueenSP11: If your hair was below your waist and she cut 5 inches off, that is still very long hair! That would still be at the mid point of your back at least? I’m sorry she didn’t listen – I’ve had the same stylist for years and I trust her.
For the pictures, I’d just throw in some clip in extensions. It should be back in 8 months, but if not, extensions again! Many look great and very natural.

Could you do an updo for your engagement photos? It could be a good time to try out a new hairstylist for your wedding.

@QueenSP11: I’m so sorry you’re going through this! At least for the wedding you could wear extensions to get the look you really want. TONS of people do this, even daily, and they look completely natural.

A haircut you hate is the worst, especially if they cut too much! Your disappointment is understandable, but don’t despair yet. My hairstylist says hair grows about a half inch per month, so the length should definitely be back in time for your wedding. As for your engagement shoot, either do like PP said and put some extensions in or wear it up so the missing length isn’t as noticeable. I’m so sorry this happened to you–I hate it when you tell them you want to keep the length but they either don’t hear you or ignore you and end up chopping it off anyway!

I’m really sorry that happened to you! I had a similar experience, instead of cutting 8 inches she cut a little over 12. I had wanted my hair to still be below my shoulders and instead it was the shortest I had ever had it – about an inch or two below my ears. I was so frustrated and she shrugged it off and told me she thought it would look better and wanted to surprise me. It went from right below my ears to mid waist in about two years. Yours will definitely grow back several inches in time for the wedding!

Thank you all so much for the support and words of encouragement. I definitely feel better knowing others have gone through this and the hair did grow back in time. What really sucks about this is that we traveled to MI (im from CA) a mere three hours after the atrocious haircut. In fact, I am in a layover in Minnesota right now. FI lives in a very small town that is currently a frozen tundra. We called his mom and asked her to please look into finding an open salon that can help me with extensions or styling this new hair. I hope it works out. My hair has grown very fast in the past I just need to have faith in it again.
Thank you bees so much for the advice! I suppose there is no use crying over something I cant fix right now.

There’s no way if your hair was at your waist 5 inches would make it THAT short. Like pps have said clip in extensions are great for this! Also, I’m sure it looks very healthy now which is a plus! Shorter than expected haircuts suck 🙁 sorry this happened to you.

Then perhaps I am underestimating the length she cut off and it was closer to 6 or 7? She cut off about half of my back :(. It reaches my bra now instead of my butt. I have never done extensions but I guess its a great time to try them. I woyld be very excited about it being healthy but it is exactlly the same health-wise. I never blowdry, color, or put product in my hair. It was perfect! Now it’s poofy lol.

I had a lady cut my hair like that, once. I asked for three inches, she cut off almost a foot (from my waist to the bottom of my shoulder blades). It was horrible.
I’d see if you can find someone to thin it out and do some real layers. That way the poof is more manageable.

can we see a photo? i think hair to your bra is probably lovely! i have super thick hair too and when it gets past my bra it just looks heavy. it is probably bouncier and more full of body. while i agree it is awful when they don’t listen and cut too much off, you still have a lot of length to work with. just curl the ends, it’ll look beautiful and fresh in the pictures, i’m sure.

That really sucks. I have no idea why some hairdressers do this. I love my hairdresser because she asks me like THREE times before she cuts. I’ll tell her something like “trim off 2 inches” and she’ll show me with her fingers, and then she will point to a spot on me (like my shoulder or collarbone or whatever), double check, and THEN she will cut. I think in the future you should show a hairdresser as well as tell her what you want. Then it’s unlikely she will mess it up. Also, it costs more, but I always go to a senior stylist.
I always wonder if the hairdressers who do this a) don’t listen b) are dumb c) are spiteful and doing this on purpose. Who knows.
For what it’s worth, I would definitely file a complaint with salon management and give the woman a bad review or two online!

@QueenSP11: I completely feel your pain! I had a bad haircut a few months back. My hair is shoulder length so cutting off a few inches made a big difference. But don’t worry! You can always add some extensions in your updo and August is 8 months away so you will be able to grow back some length.

What is with hair stylist who NEVER respect your wishes and don’t actually keep the length you ask?? Like I’m terrified to go back after my hair stylist cut my super long, almost to my butt hair to just below my shoulders?? I was so angry, i was crying in the chair and she wouldn’t apologiIze and like, stood by her work?? So weird! I’ll never go back to anyone who I don’t FULLY trust with my hair.
