I ran my second half marathon this weekend. My previous time was 2:21:43 (10:48 pace). I watched the predicted temperature rise all last week and knew it was going to be hot. My main goal was to have a good race mentally, since last time I really struggled not to give up. It was a sunny, clear sky day and the route went through gorgeous country scenery.
My first mile was very slow, since I started out in the very back of the pack. I steadily increased my pace and hit the 5 mile mark at 51 minutes. I kept going and going and hit 10 miles at an hour and 41 minutes. The second half of the race was long and seemed to drag on, but I made it. I crossed the finish line at 2:12:15 (10:05 pace!) That was well over a 9 minute PR. I was so excited, and still am!
I decided not to carry my handheld and hoped that the aid stations would be enough. I took a Clif Shot before the start and carried 2 with me, but only took 1 at mile 4.5. My stomach churned a bit with it, so instead of taking the third, I switched to Powerade at the aid stations. It seemed to work well.
I really didn’t expect to run that well. Now I have about 2 months until my goal race, the Empire State Half Marathon on october 21. My goal has been to get a sub 2:10 half marathon, and I think I can do it! I need to do some speed work though…
Did anyone else race this weekend?
