We had a religious ceremony and also did a handfasting. I would copy/paste the reading we did, but weddingbee coding freaks out when I try.

Your wedding ceremony should be full of things that are meaningfull to you as a couple.  We plan on incorporating a few ceremonial customs that our families have never seen that really speak to US!

kitty_cupcake:  We’re doing it. I like its Celtic roots, since I’m a descendant of the Conchobair kings.

Plus, it’s taking the place of something like a sand ceremony. I wanted something unique.

I’m actually Jewish, but we’re having a secular ceremony. I just like the symbolism of the ceremony. And it’s literally “tying the knot!”

I really wanted to do Hanfasting by my Fi did not.

Handfasting Ceremony – Blessing

Blessed be this union with the gifts of the East. Communication of the heart, mind, and body Fresh beginnings with the rising of each Sun. The knowledge of the growth found in the sharing of silences.

Blessed be this union with the gifts of the South. Warmth of hearth and home The heat of the heart’s passion The light created by both to illuminate the darkest of times.

Blessed be this union with the gifts of the West. The deep commitments of the lake The swift excitement of the river The refreshing cleansing of the rain The all encompassing passion of the sea.

Blessed be this union with the gifts of the North Firm foundation on which to build Fertility of the fields to enrich your lives A stable home to which you may always return.

Each of these blessings emphasizes those things which will help you build a happy and successful union. Yet they are only tools. Tools which you must use together in order to create what you seek in this union.

Handfasting Verse

Now you are bound one to the other With a tie not easy to break. Take the time of binding Before the final vows are made To learn what you need to know – To grow in wisdom and love. That your marriage will be strong That your love will last In this life and beyond.

The Giving of Rings Verse

I take you my heart At the rising of the moon And the setting of the stars. To love and to honour Through all that may come. Through all our lives together In all our lives, May we be reborn That we may meet and know And love again, And remember

We did a version of a handfasting.  I say a version because there are so many different forms this ceremony can take.  Ours was an outdoor and secular ceremony.  We did some research on different ways to do the handfasting and came up with what we wanted to say and how we wanted to tie the knot, etc.  I think it worked out really well!  Handfasting is not just for those who are Pagan…and we incorporate so many Pagan traditions into our modern lives anyway, so I wouldn’t feel awkward about that.

Here’s a picture of our cord- we had it made by a woman on etsy.  It’s now hanging in our living room!

I love it.  If you do some googling you kind find all different kinds of things.  My Fiance agreed to do a love cup  (Quaich) where we drink something.  There is also a fishermans knot one.

kitty_cupcake:  We did it instead of a unity candle or sand ceremony. I don’t think it would be hypocritical.
