I have previously written posts about how I left my last job during the probationary period and have been harassed by former co-workers there, including “hacking” my personal email accounts. Obviously I did not use anyone from there as a reference, so I used people from my job before that, where I only worked for about 8 months, and other professional references. Until about a month a go I used to go into this business regularly as a customer. I would see my former co-workers and my former supervisor (we’ll call her Supe1) would always enquire how my job hunt was going?
Supe1 claimed she wanted to be a reference when I became unemployed last year but later told me that she couldn’t give me a reference for “legal reasons.” Another supervisor (Supe2) was also my reference. The last time I was in the the business as a Supe2 cornered me by the door and asked (loudly in front of all the other customers): “Are you still unemployed? Has your husband left you yet because you’re unemployed? Are you going to lose your house?”
I told Supe2 I was happy being a housewife and would take a good opportunity if it came along and worked well with my family oblibations. I got out of there as quickly as possible and took Supe2 off my reference list.
My question is, because I know Supe1 was called several times in the course of my unemployment, should I go ahead and email her to let her know I have a new job and noone will be calling her? I am no longer working in public service, having taken and Admin job in a private company in another town, so it is unlikely I will run into anyone that I used to work with. However my new employer has me on a 90 day probationary period, and point blank told me if it doesn’t work out for either one of us he’ll just “let me go” after 90 days and “no harm no foul”. I HOPE that doesn’t happen, but if so I will have to use Supe1 as a reference again. For this position I got around it because was hired mainly on the strength of my portfolio and interview. If I were to lose this job so suddenly I would look like a real dork in front of Supe1. I don’t want to lose all professional contact with her, although from our last few interactions it seems like she wants to distance herself. Suggestions?
