Guess I just can’t stay away from this forum this week haha.
I’m trying to finish up my wedding topper. Below are pictures of the inspirational cake and two progress pictures.
When we finally picked out the cake, I had this thought of two cats just being so happy surrounded by fruits. We call each other cat, so I thought cats as topper it is!
I found this wooden heart shaped base yesterday and it seems like the perfect size! The girl cat will be holding the strawberry which I will glue with a hot glue gun after I’m done painting it with watercolour or acrylic (but probably will start with watercolour first). I also bought 3/4 inch wooden letters which I’ll use to spell the month and year of the wedding near the bottom curve of the heart.
My thoughts are now turning towards food safety and placement.
I have a friend who does cakes as a side job and she suggested putting a layer of fondant underneath the heart shaped base (which I’ll likely spray paint gold) to act as a barrier between the actual cake and the topper itself. Definitely I do not want the topper laying bare on the cake as spray paint is toxic. The heart shape wooden base is definitely smaller than the six inch top tier of the cake.
But then I worry that the topper will cover the whole top tier of the cake and it won’t look as good. My Maid/Matron of Honor suggested that if I want, I can also place the topper next to the cake instead of on the cake. And also I worry that my topper is a bit…lacking. But it’s a bit too late. It’s either this topper or no topper.
Any thoughts bee? I’ll be painting it this weekend and hoping to give it to the bakery by next week.

I have no advice but these are SO CUTE. I have been searching high and low for cat cake toppers on etsy that I liked and this is cuter than anything I have seen online! Nice work bee!!

I actually saw that (or something very similar) on Etsy! Then I saw the price tag and I was like…maybe this can be a DIY thing. >.>
Would a mazipan or an almond paste topper last? I only went with clay because I have some familiarity with clay. We’re hoping to keep this as a momento in the future.

Thanks a lot. 😀
I was looking for cat toppers too earlier in the wedding planning, but I just felt the ones I liked were way over my budget. Toppers aren’t like the most important thing so I figure even if I mess it up, we can still eat the cake. 😀 But thank you for the kind words.

- Wedding: March 2017 - Ceremony: Cellon Oak Park; Reception: Alachua Woman\'s Club
How big is your topper and how big will your top tier be? I don’t think you’ll be able to put as much fruit on top as the inspiration pic with your topper on it but I think it would still look good. I think it would be disappointing to have the topper you worked so hard on beside the cake instead of on the top. You would only need a small piece of fondant the size of the wooden base to serve as a barrier between the base and the cake. I wouldn’t delve into marpapan or almod paste at this point unless you’ve worked with them before. I’d stick with the clay and then you can keep your cute topper as a keepsake.
