I find the older I get the less invincible I feel and I am afraid of everything.
I found a mice problem in the walk-up attic of my apartment last weekend. All of my belongings were covered in droppings and I spent the better part of the day cleaning it up- sweeping, vacuuming, etc. Come to find out these are all the cleaning methods you are NOT supposed to do – let alone without a proper respirator. I did wear gloves.
I’ve set 10+ traps and have caught 3 mice. I finally got a good look at one and am sure it’s a deer mouse- which carries hantavirus. Basically it’s transmitted by distributing the urine and dropping as infected particles then get into the air. Mortality rate is huge at over 30% and it appears to take about 2-6 weeks to show symptoms.
SHOULD I be freaking out about this? I can’t stop thinking about it! Anyone else clean up mouse droppings (deer mice) and live to tell the tale? lol. Please put my mind at ease!!

There have been fewer than 750 cases of Hantavirus in the United States ever. You are literally more likely to die of a vending machine tipping over on you.
How else is this fear manifesting in your life? Is it keeping you up at night? Are you not able to live as freely and happily as you did before?
Therapy might help you with those things, to see if you have an actual anxiety disorder.

This is a huge fear of mine as well because I am constantly dealing with mice and their droppings (I live in the country). I have swept and vacuumed droppings without a mask many times by accident because sometimes it is unavoidable and you don’t know until it’s too late. I think you’re probably okay but you could always talk to your doctor!

I never knew this was a thing and I’m glad I didn’t after all of the mouse issues we dealt with at our previous dwelling. From December to June I dealt with mouse dropping issues on a pretty much daily basis and lived to tell the tale. You will be fine.

I would contact your local public health unit or your doctor to be on the safe side. I’m assuming that it is something that they could test for. I know if it were me, I wouldn’t be able to rest until I knew definitively and I would imagine all kinds of symptoms that I was experiencing.
