@Mrs. Wallaby:  Hardwood all the way. It’s pretty much an investment in your house and it makes the most sense in your situation. Also I hate hate hate carpet :] so I’m glad it’s dominating the poll!

I have allergies, so hardwood all the way!  You can always add an area rug.  If you want to be grossed out, look at what carpet padding looks like after a couple of years.  That’s the crap you’re walking on and breathing in!  And we’re looking at houses now, and we’d happily pay a premium for a house that already has all hardwoods in it.

I agree with hardwood in the bedroom with an area rug under the bed. It helped my allergies so much when we pulled up all the carpet.

I love hardwood floors but I would never want them in a bedroom.  They are too cold and sterile feeling for a bedroom for me.  I want comfy, cozy carpets!

I would carpet the bedroom, it’s so luxurious.

Hmm… I voted for carpet, because I think it makes a room cozier and is less likely to look gross in such a low-traffic room, but I totally forgot about area rugs!  So I’m going to throw my vote in for hardwood floors.  You’re right that they add resale value, they last longer, and they look classy as all get-out.  I’d then add a gorgeous area rug for personality / cozy factor.

We have hardwood in our apartment and I like that for the bedroom.  We have an area rug so we don’t step onto cold floors, etc.

We have 2 dogs, so I prefer wood because it’s easy to clean.  Area rugs can be replaced much easier than a whole room of carpet if they stain.  Plus chaning the area rug is an easy and affordable way to redecorate at any time.

Hardwood! It looks better and it will help resale later. Plus area rugs are so much more fun if you like the cozy feel

@Mrs. Wallaby:  I had the joy of pulling out carpet in our home to put in hardwood (FI does construction for a living so did all the work himself). The carpet was not old – no stains or anything – but, what I saw… it terrified me. If I have the choice I will never have carpet again. As PPs have said, it’s gross. You can vacuum and shampoo it all you want but you aren’t ever going to get all the dirt and crap up from all the layers.

@Mrs. Wallaby:  One thing with dog fur on hardwoods – they never look clean.  We have a lab and our whole main floor is hardwoods and literally, within 15 minutes of us cleaning, you really can’t tell that we did anything.  The hair just floats over the top of the floor.

Area rugs are much cheaper and easier to clean or replace than carpet. Our house is 100% tile and I love it. Just get a really good hardfloor vacuum since the convertible ones don’t work that great for tile or wood floors. We have the Vac Then Steam and it’s great.
