the family ones are my favorite.
watching the harlem shake is such a culture fuck (excuse my language) it makes me think where the hell is everyone’s mind at.
and then I want to join in the madness and have fun too.

Some of them are good, but for the most part I’m fairly ‘meh’ on the whole thing. I think it became so popular as it is easy and doesn’t take much effort.
@joya_aspera: I think most people got it. Maybe not the first time watching it, due to the languange barrier and the style, but when talking to people IRL they seemed to get it.
I appreciated the various Gangnam style videos more, they actually required some thought and effort!

Am i the only on that doesn’t understand the point? When I first heard of it I thought of the dance we used to do in middle school. This just confused me. Maybe if I wasn’t expecting that I would have liked it more. Does anyone know why it’s called the harlem shake?

I heard a story on NPR that said there was a “real” Harlem Shake dance in the 90’s, and some commentators were saying that the current version may have some racist overtones in that it ridicules the original. I don’t know much about it, but thought i’d mention it. I’d be interested to know the story behind it.

This Freddie Wong video is the only one with the Harlem Shake thing that doesn’t annoy the crap out of me.

@Omgbunnies: The harlem shake is something that wasn’t really that funny to begin with, and has been over for a long time. Anybody who still thinks it’s cool or a thing should consider themselves obsolete to internet culture.

@joya_aspera: Uugh, don’t talk to me about the message behind Gangnam style. It really annoyed me when it was a thing because everybody else was just laughing idiotically and badically saying ‘the man dance and it funny’. It’s annoying when people don’t get stuff like that.

I’m just going to say I’m not aware of any high school dance from way back when, or connotation, or subtext, or anything like that. All I know about the Harlem Shake is that there’s nothing much going on for the first few seconds of a song, then, suddenly craziness ensues, either by a bunny, or some elderly people, or even a washing machine in one video I saw. That’s as far as my concern goes for it, I think they’re hilarious.
I can’t speak to any social commentary regarding this short video, or that there used to be a dance by the same name in middle school / high school, nothing like that.
Just wanted to be clear. I’m not an idiot nor am I obsolete. I just like watching bunnies hopping around, elderly people still having fun, and the Grumpy Cat doing what he does best. If it’s to music, all the better.

I find it dumb. I really don’t get the current obsession with the Harlem Shake videos.

It’s not my cup of tea, but whatever!
I am a Gagnam Style WHORE on the other hand!
I will Gagnam on command. I think it is SO much fun! Fiance HATES it!
But I generally enjoy all group dances! I just don’t really see the Harlem Shake is a dance? Maybe the one in the 90s, but not really the one now…
