Well, I think with all of the vampire/werewolf novels that have recently taken off because of Twilight, it’s a good indication that readers look for books with similar elements. I think some Harry Potter fans would definitely be welcoming of something having to do with a boarding school, as long as there weren’t too many other elements that made it seem as though it were trying to take away from the original.

    Does that make sense?

Are you thinking a boarding school like in X-men?

    Or like in gossip girl?

I’m somewhat confused: is it just a “boarding school” theme, or is it boarding school + wizarding? B/c I’m still digging the boarding school theme, but I think adding wizarding to the mix might be overdone, and could possibly cross into the realm of HP fanfic. You would have to be REALLY, REALLY careful in how you did it, and make it incredibly different from the HP series.

How much of an HP fan are you? B/c distancing yourself from it might be difficult if you end up going back to it for inspiration. I completely applaud you for even writing though – so many people talk about it, and how they want to write, but you’re actually doing it. High five!

@SoontobeMrsA: Hahaha, can we just reflect on what a bad 19 year old I am right now? I didn’t know Gossip Girl had anything to do with boarding school.

@Ms. Polar Bear: I think that with enough originality behind it, it wouldn’t feel as if it were falling into a “genre” at all.

And I totally feel you on growing up with Harry Potter- I’ve been a fan for way more than half of my life!

I think it depends on what you want to do with it. I notice you are a grad student — in what? Are you trying to get published? Or is this more of a hobby thing? I think that if you are a hobby writer, do whatever you want. I think if you are trying to get into publishing, you may be better off finding your own (non-)gimmick…

LOL In Gossip Girl, Serena is coming home from boarding school in the very beginning. Her stories are full of drugs and sex lol.

I would totally read that! I love that genre and I’m always waiting for a new series to pop up that is like Harry Potter. Granted I want it to be different and not follow the same story line or have similar characters but if you wrote something like that I would jump up and down and be the first to buy the book. 🙂

Hey! I loved the Harry Potter books I’ve read so far (was sheltered as a chid and just started reading them recently. I’m on the third book I think)

    But I think I’m most curious…are you a writer?

@Ms. Polar Bear: I liked Gossip Girl a lot in the beginning but I don’t watch it anymore. I like the books. OH she writes a whole series about boarding school. I think it’s called “The It girl”
