I like both, though I will without a doubt agree that HP is the better written story and sends a better message.

I feel like the words of John Green (one of my favorite authors) sum up my feelings the best:

“…now and again a fantasy world comes along that is SO engrossing and intoxicating that you never even stop to think, like, isn’t it a little bit, you know, criminal for 107-year-olds to have a relationship with 16-year-old girls?

And, for me and millions of others, such is the case with Twilight: you just wanna keep turning the pages of the books because nothing matters more to you than the question of whether or not they will, you know, finally…do it. There, I said it.

And, yes, I think Edward and Bella’s relationship dynamics are troubling, and that you shouldn’t conflate obsession with love. But we all romanticize the people we adore, particularly in high school, and Edward Cullen and Jacob Black are both really well-idealized romantic others. And by “well-idealized romantic others,” I of course mean that they are hot.

So Hank, I just saw “New Moon” the movie, and to be honest I thought it was kind-of stupid, but it reminded me of what I really do like about Twilight: it’s fun, it distracts me from the pain and brokeness of the world, it argues that true love will triumph in the end, which may or may not be true, but if it’s a lie, it’s the most beautiful lie we have.

That’s why I think the question of whether Harry Potter or Twilight is better is, as the Buddhist would say, a question wrongly asked. As a series, I don’t think they’re after the same goals. And I’d like to think that we can read broadly enough to live in a world that includes both of them, and more. You know, like my books. (also, like, Shakespeare). “

Are there any other nerdfighters out there on the bee?

Twilight is a crock of shit. Harry Potter has been a huge part of my life since age 11. No contest at all in my mind.

i like, no make that love, both ALOT…. but i can’t really compare the two. they are different experiences for me and i like them both for different reasons. i think the only thing they have in common is that they are magical (ie., vampires, werewolves, wizards, you know, the kind of stuff that you don’t encounter in real life), and they were both made into movies that exploded with popularity.

I like both but in different ways. Twilight for me, is like a beach book you read for mindless fun sitting on the sand with a margarita. You’re not thinking too much about it, it’s girly and fun and dramatic, breezy. You won’t learn anything or have a thought provoking discussion about it, but it’s fun. Harry Potter is a meatier read, the characters are deeper and better developed and in general I like the message much better than Twilight. But I’ve read and enjoyed both.

@KatyElle:  i agree about Twilight being a fun, mindless read. i may have fallen in love with Edward and Jacob along the way, but it was definitely a “vacation” book that doesn’t require too much concentration.  And one i can read more than once (or rather listen to on audiobook) to pass the time when i am doing boring chores, driving, etc.  I have only read the HP books once.

I’m definitely more of a Harry Potter fan. I could have grown up with it though because the first book came out when I was 11; but, I disregarded the hype and I didn’t get into them until my freshman year in college when the 6th book came out. I absolutely loved them even at an older age because of the world they created and the depth of the stories.

I feel like Twilight is a Harlequin novel for teens. You read them for enjoyment but they lack depth and actual plot.

I love Harry Potter, always have always will.  Like others mentioned, I feel like I grew up with the characters, and it does make me sad that the series is over.  It also doesn’t help that the Deathly Hallows Part 2 movie was a major disappointment.  Harry Potter is positive.  I’ve read the series multiple times, and am actually considering re-reading it now that this topic came up.

I have read the whole Twilight series, and have seen all the movies, but it’s just not the same.  Putting them on the same level isn’t even fathomable to me.  In fact, although they were good books, I had always thought that Edward & Bella’s relationship was ridiculously unhealthy.   No life lessons for youth here, just entertainment.

    I dislike both equally 🙂

Seriously I thought Harry Potter was incredibly confusing.  Probably because I wasn’t paying enough attention, too many characters and names of crap I’m supposed to remember from one movie to the next.  (Or maybe we’re talking books here and if so I didn’t read any of them).

Twilight is silly stupid.  There weren’t sooo many characters to keep track of so that wasn’t a problem.  But it wasn’t really exciting or anything special.  Kind of boring and overdramatic.
