Yes, I’ve done it for a year or two and I liked it a lot, although I wasn’t going consistently/daily. I think you definitely see results but like anything else, it’s how much you put into it. In addition, like anything else, it depends on the studio and instructor. Overall, there is definitely toning and lean muscle with a little sculpting and some people there that were fastidious about clean eating and power yoga did have nice abs and arms going on there. I liked it a lot and the humidity and heat really helped my skin. I stopped going because 1) I’m pregnant and 2) the studios here that I liked were getting super crowded and I don’t like doing yoga in a crammed room.

@MrsWe:  Absolutely. I’ve been doing power yoga (a vinyasa flow class) for about 2 years, 3 times a week. I do it for the physical benefits, but my practice has improved vastly when I started researching the mental/spiritual aspect of the practice. I think you’ll be surprised at the physical requirements of the class. Prepare yourself for a lof of yoga pushups (part of the vinyasa) and the realization that hey! there are muscles working you didn’t even know existed.

I also do a hot vinyasa flow class usually 3 times a week.  It is an AWESOME stress reliever and has done wonders for my core strength.  Fantastic side benefit? My migraines have been greatly reduced!

Oh, I just thought of another thing. If you haven’t been to yoga before, or are new to the studio, try to arrice 10-15 minutes before class, especially if you need to borrow/rent a mat. Introduce yourself to the instructor, and don’t feel shy about saying it’s your first time.

For clothes, wear ones that are fairly tight, so the instructor can see your body. Don’t wear a baggy t-shirt, or a tank top that will flop up when you’re in down dog, or any inversions. You’ll spend more time adjusting your clothes than actually practicing.

Sorry if this is repetitive, but I’ve seen so many first-timers struggle in annoyance to tuck their shirts in to baggy shorts or get flustered with wide-leg sweatpants.

Lastly, don’t focus on what anyone else around you is doing, and don’t force yourself to go beyond your limits. Everyone is at a different level, and those change day-to-day. I sometimes leave my balance at home and feel like a total novice. Focus on you, and dont forget to breathe. 🙂

Love hot vinyasa yoga. I have been doing it once a week for 18 months now. I’m more lean and flexible since starting. I can do moves I struggled with when I started and it has changed my body shape. It has improved by breathing when stressed and my posture.

Agree with those saying do what YOU can and rest when you need to. Keep at it and you will notice progress

I love Hot Power Yoga!  It’s a great workout and it really stretches me out and makes me feel more centered for the day.  I try to practice 3 times a week (60 minutes each).  Very addictive!
