How did it work for you??
Myself and a few of my girlfriends are going to start going to classes after Thanksgiving. We are all students and we get free use of the gym and fitness classes so I figured… hey! Why not take advantage of it?
I’m already pretty thin (5’2″, 100 lbs), but I’m just wondering if it’s helped any other bees as far as toning/shaping up? 😉 I’ve gotten SUPER out of shape! I do want to get more fit, but I want it to show, too, y’know?
Also, was it super hard to pick up at first? I’ve heard some of the moves can be kind of tricky, and even though I’m usually a pretty good dancer, I’m worried I’m gonna look like a crazy person, haha.

It depends on the instructor. The class that I go to is really aerobic-like and the moves are meant to work some part of your body, they’re not just dance moves. I’ve gone to other classes where it’s a full blown choreography and I don’t like those beacuse you’re just doing cardio. You have to find one that is more aerobic-like to get toned.

One of my best friends has been doing Zumba for years, and she hasnt really lost any weight. Keeps her fit, she can go for long periods of time, but she still wears a 14.

@rachelmichelle: i did it for a few weeks and loved it! only stopped going because i couldnt get to the class anymore. so i obviously cant vouch for the results but i definitely felt muscles i didnt know i had, so painful the next day! i think you’ll enjoy it, and as for looking like a crazy person.. you wont be the only one! lol

I went for about 4 months and stopped because the classes were always SO packed. Most of the women in my classes were heavy and looked the exact same at the end of the 4 months.
ETA: The moves are pretty easy. Even if you don’t pick them up for2-3 classes always be sure to go in the correct direction if you’re near other people. There were always the same couple of ladies in my classes who were always banging into/whacking people around them because they were going left when everyone else was going right. Sooo annoying.

I loved Zumba when I was doing it. You really have to get a good instructor though. The first class I went to was a bunch of old women and it sucked. Then I found one taught by a girl in her 20s and it was so much fun. With Zumba and diet, I lost 15lbs in about 4 months (but I was hardcore on the diet…needed to fit into my dress). Once this baby comes, I’ll start doing it again. Definitely try out a few classes and don’t give up after the first one!

UPDATE: Eeeee I went with a friend today and it was SO FUN.
My friend was going to the classes regularly a couple of years ago and really liked this particular instructor, so we went to her class.
It KICKED MY BUTT. I was sweating like CRAZY about ten minutes in, and kept sweating through the remainder of the hour lol.
I can already tell my buns are gonna be a little sore, maybe my thighs as well. It was so intense!
I really loved it- I think we are gonna try to go back for another class this week. <3

@rachelmichelle: Glad you updated! I bought a groupon for a place that includes Zumba. I was going to do it with my friend, but she said she’s pooped ad didn’t buy it… so… I was feeling weird about doing it alone. I’m afraid I’ll look and feel retarded, especially by myself… haha. Good to hear that you enjoyed it though and got a good workout from it! I really want to put on some muscle and become just a bit more “sculpted” or “in shape” looking. So your update makes me more hopeful. ^_^

My Maid/Matron of Honor has been doing for a couple months and lost 30 lbs. I haven’t tried it yet though I want to.

Zumba is AMAZING! I tried it once and it was an hour long and it whooped my butt! I wish I could have stayed with it but I have no time or money due to nursing school. It definitely is a great work out and I don’t see how you can’t lose weight if you did it 4-5 times a week (and if you still eat like a pig) It is intesnse though! My muscles are sore just thinking about it.

I enjoyed it…but I never really felt I got that great of a workout from it. I used to actually work out for 20-30 min before I’d go to the class (I’d go with a friend who asked me to sometimes). I know a lot of people that love it though. Could have been the instructor/dances as well. For some reason I’ve never been too into classes. But I did do a lot of aerobic kickboxing for awhle and I enjoyed that more than Zumba. I’m giving yoga a try soon (I bought a groupon for 2 months unlimited classes) so I’m hoping I’ll enjoy it! I’ve always been more of a run/hike/stairmaster/elliptical girl for some reason!

@rachelmichelle: i’m a Zumba instructor, so obviously, I’m a big fan. Great to hear that you had a positive first experience! If you want to find more classes in your area, check zumba.com. Anyone who’s certified will show up in the database! 🙂

I tried it a few times and absolutely did NOT like it. I feel like I got robbed of a possible good experience with it. The instructor was awful, the place was packed, and people are so rude. The instructor KNEW that there were new people in the class. She asked before we started. But she still didn’t bother to lead or explain anything at all. She just switched from move to move at a rapid pace and left all of us fumbling around. Very unenjoyable. I ended up leaving the gym and starting my own workouts at home. It was an expensive gym, too. Total letdown.

I have fun at Zumba and I feel I do get a good workout from it. I try to follow it up with an hour of yoga as well. For those of you who feel like you’re not getting a good workout, you need to tighten your buns, hold in your abs and really focus on posture. If you’re just flailing around (pretty much how I Zumba lol) you won’t get nearly as much of a toning workout.
