I voted other. I was like you, dropped not so subtle hints. Then stumbled upon the emails of the rings he was looking at. It looked like he’d narrowed it down to 2 rings, NEITHER of which were like the rings I’d shown him. One of them I actually thought was a cute idea, but HIDEOUS. Guess which one he bought…LOL. Turns on it looks amazing in person and I love my ring. I love it even more since he picked it out all by himself…well with the help of his sister.

Do you have someone who knows your taste and could be trusted to go ring shopping with him? I told Mr. LK that I wanted to chose my own ring, but that if he felt strongly about chosing the ring himself he should at least take my SIL shopping with him because she and I have the same personal style and she is a shopping pro. In the end, he agreed that I should be the one to chose my ring, and we got engaged with a family heirloom as a place holder so that we could make the ring decision together. But at least I knew I had given him a solid back-up plan if he had chosen the more traditional route.

Looking at the one he picked out and the one you love, I can see why you are worried about being disappointed!  You want something simple and he wants something ‘blingy.’ Maybe you or someone else (relative, close friend) can talk to him about it and try and steer him toward a more simple design.

I know some people say it should be all his choice since he’s buying/designing it for you but your taste should be a major factor in it. You’re the one whose going to be wearing it!

Maybe something combining a bit of both?

This is hard because most guys take pride in the ring they pick. However, it is a reflection of you and your style. But yet, it comes from your future hubby so you should love it. My ring was not want I thought I wanted but after seeing it in the box I was just so over come with joy that I didn’t even care it wasn’t want I thought I would get. But to this day, I look at it and love his choice. Also, people are often stopping me in front of him and saying he did a good job so this is all that matters in the end. Good luck.

I sent my Fiance a lot of pics showing him what I wanted.  The only thing I said I didn’t really want was a cluster of diamonds as a center stone.  Well, guess what my ring looks like!  HOWEVER – I love it!  It is absolutely perfect! He put a ton of thought into the ring and what it would look like on my hand and I couldn’t imagine having anything different! He picked it out completely on his own and that makes it even more special.

Hopefully, even if he doesn’t get you exactly what you think you want, you will fall in love with what he does give you, just like I did!

I am also a waiting bee.  SO made a joke, but I thought he was serious about saying I wouldn’t get a diamond ring when we got married.  Which I was bummed.  But I found a ring from JCP that I actaully loved and it had stimulated diamonds in it.  Which I was ok with.  Well we were just talking and he said he was so happy I wasn’t high maintance.lol  Which I’m not.  I’m a simple type of girl.  Well I mentioned the ring I had shown him again on the JCP site.  He’s like you aren’t getting that ring.  I already have a ring in mind that will have a ruby since that is apparently his fav. stone.  Which I had no idea until tonight.lol  With diamonds.  Apparently he’s been looking around or something.  Which is news to me.LOL  He kept on saying I’d be real happy with it.  I’m just not sure how I feel about a wedding ring/e-ring with gemstones in it?  I’ve never really been a gemstone type of girl.  So I voted “other” on the poll.

@reine_de_rien: your ring is lovely, but i would be disappointed to. My grandma left me her ering when she died, but there is no way i would have been happy for it to be my engagement ring, it is like you say not mine, its hers, and a memory of her, id think my fi was being really cheap if he gave me a ring that was already mine!

Note my grandmas ring although old fashioned has bigger stoes and is more valuable than my ering, i did not mind how much he spent but i did want a ring that was chosen special for me.

Her heirloom ring is very beautiful, but I can imagine her disappointment as well.

If possible, I want to receive heirloom ring as a some sort of gift in different occasion, not as an engagement ring.

If a man completely disregards what the woman says she wants and tells her that she will love the ring he gives her, that strikes me as a red flag. That’s awfully presumptuous, isn’t it? She’s TOLD him what she likes and wants and he basically refuses to get it. I don’t know, but that would require a HUGE amount of explaining to make me okay with that. And then I would assure him that he would love the wedding ring I bought for him, whether it was what he wanted or not.

annasaf83:  I voted No. I can understand how you feel though. I actually gave my Fiance lots of pictires of what I liked and we went ring shopping a few times. In the end, the ring he got me is absolutely *unlike* anything I had showed him, but I think it actually looks way better than anything I had picked. I love the ring he gave me and now I wonder why I liked the ones I did before.

He also asked me a questions and hinted at rings I thought I would hate, saying that I would love what he got me. The ring he ended up giving me looked nothing like anything he asked me about. He told me after he proposed that he was just trying to throw me off! Maybe that’s what your guy is up to?
