Has anyone done or seen a mother-daughter dance instead of father-daughter?

Yes! I just went to a wedding with a mother/daughter dance as the bride’s father was unfortunately not alive. They started out with a cute slow dance where you could see them chatting away and hugging each other, and then they picked up the tempo and did a little choreographed dance..nothing fancy, they were just having fun. It was quite cute and everyone loved it.

Do you think your dad would be offended or sad? I know you said you aren’t close, but that would be the only concern that would come to mind.

I don’t know my father. My mom is walking me down the aisle and I am planning on surprising her with a mother daughter dance after our first dance! I cannot wait! I think so many people get caught up in traditions and expections and forget that it’s your day! I am not saying do not think of anyone else’s feelings but do what feels best to you; the people close to you should understand.

Good Luck! Do you have a mother daughter song in mind? I am trying to figure that one out still.

Go for it! I did both a father/daughter and mother/daughter dance. My parents are divorced and my mom really wanted to walk me down the aisle with my dad, but she still has a lot of anger towards my dad and I know it was because she wanted to take that moment away from him. I offered her a mother/daughter dance instead and she agreed. Nobody said a word to me about it, so I don’t know if people thought it was odd, but the people who know my mom didn’t think anything of it I’m sure. Just last night she said she heard the song we danced to and it made her smile, so it will be a nice memory for her.

Is it possible to do both? I’m asking both of my parents to walk me down the aisle, and there may not be any parent dances at all at my wedding, since my fiance’s mother unfortunately isn’t physically able to dance. If it works for you, you could ask both to walk you down the aisle, and have a dance that starts with one parent and one song and switchs to the other parent and other song partway through. Or just two different dances

nattywed :  Actually, I’ve seen brides and moms do first dances together many times in my photographer’s & videographer’s websites.

My sister did a dance with both my parents. It started as a father/daughter dance and then like a PP mentioned, the song got a little faster pace and she invited my mom on the dance floor. The three of them danced and it was super cute and my mom was very touched. She didn’t know it was coming and honestly I don’t know if my sister even planned it, it might have been a spur of the moment decision. She just knew she wanted to dance with both of our parents and have that special fun moment with them. The pictures of it were adorable too, the look of joy on everyone’s face was totally worth it!

Remember, it is your wedding, you can do pretty much anything you want. My only suggestion is if you do two totally different dances, don’t make them too long. Especially if your groom is doing a dance with his mom. That could be four special dances (1st dance, FOB, MOB, MOG) and if each is like 4-5 minutes that’s a long time for your guests to sit around and watch you dance. I give the same advice to anyone planning their special dances, get short versions of the songs you choose to dance to!

My uncle and mom walked me down the aisle and I did a dance to one song with both. Started with my uncle and my mom came in mid song. Best moment ever!!!!!! LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of tears but one of my favorite parts of the wedding
