We went to our friend’s lakehouse this weekend and they were talking about starting up the South Beach diet to lose some weight for their wedding next year. We’ve got about 3 and a half months to go, and they inspired us to think about it trying it out as well. Fiance has his bachelor party labor day weekend, but we are hoping to start Phase 1 when he gets back!
I’ve never tried anything like this, but now that we’re getting into the home stretch we’re hoping to make some real changes to our lifestyles to lose a few pounds and be healthier in general. Have any Bees tried South Beach before? What were your results? Any resources for recipes? Words of wisdom or advice?

I did SB a long time ago and I DID lose the 12 or 14 lbs. within the phase 1 period. It does work if you follow it. I stopped following it and of course gained it back. The diet is quite healthy, it promotes a lot of vegetables, lean meats/protein, good fats & little to no sugar/carbs. It does introduce limited carbs after phase 1. I think it’s a good plan personally.

I’ve never tried south beach, but I’ve done paleo, which is like south beach’s heroine addicted second cousin, and it was hard =O

I tried the SB diet, and its really hard through phase one, but as you can introduce foods back into your diet its not so bad.
I tried the paleo diet for a bit, and it was wayyy too hard for me. haha. I like my beans and can’t eat chicken for breakfast as one of my diet plans suggested haha.

yea, the only reason I survived is because I’m a fruit fiend, I just ate fruit all the time…but eventually it got a little ridiculous! I lost about 15 lbs on it which put me ‘technically’ underweight, and I was eating all the time. So I had to add some things back in to stop losing weight so much. That diet is hardcore lol.

I did a modified phase 1 SB for a few weeks. I don’t remember the specifics, but I ate some foods from phase 2. It worked really well and helped me lose a few pounds, but I couldn’t sustain it because I felt very…backed up…. I guess I needed more fiber. It didn’t feel too restrictive, but it was difficult because I had to read every single label of everything I bought, and I just wasn’t used to doing that. There’s cornsyrup and other no-no’s in all sorts of stuff you wouldn’t expect.

If you can get through Phase 1, its manageable. I did 12 days of Phase 1 a few years ago, lost 10 pounds, and nearly killed everyone I knew – I was such a raving lunatic from the lack of crabs. It sucks, because it really does work, but I need bread and fruit to survive. Good luck if you try it!

I’ve also heard the Phase 1 is incredibly difficult, I’m hoping if we can survive that then Phase 2 doesn’t seem so bad. Two weeks doesn’t sound like such a long time, but I’m sure I’ll feel differently when I’ve got no bread or sugar!

like almost any “diet” it will work if you follow it. however phase 1 is really hard to follow. Especially if you are an active person. I felt so hungry all the time. But, I also dont eat much meat. I lost weight but gained it all back very quickly because it was too hard for me

SO is actually doing South Beach right now!
I’ve been thinking about starting it myself, because I can’t eat the things he cooks very well without gaining weight, probably because I’m not restricting carbs or much of anything at all, really. I got the book and another small book that is a quick yes-or-no when you need to find out whether something is permissable or not.
I recommend Half Price Books/your local used book store or thrift store. It’s been out long enough that people who have tried it and decided it wasn’t for them are selling and donating the books in quantity. I got mine cheap.

Yes, I got my copy for $1 from half price books! I figured that’s a pretty minor investment. I saw the Good Carbs/Bad Carbs book…did you think it was worth it to buy that as well?
My friend and her Fiance (the ones who inspired us to try it) started last week and have lost 6 lbs apiece! I’m hoping we’ll have the same success.

I’ve done it before and it does work. Only problem is if you go back to eating fatty foods you’ll gain the weight back quickly. If you follow the diet and make it your normal diet you should be fine.
