Well, I’ve done it, but our situation was a little different because we were already married (by the JOP). Our REAL wedding was in July, but we had a ceremony in October. In August I had to find a dress, but my ring hadn’t come in from the jeweler yet so we hadn’t announced our engagement.

It was all very strange but it worked out in the end… as I’m sure your situation will too!

I didnt but I did go dress shopping. We had picked our colour scheme almost 6 monnths before he proposed and we waited 2 years after that to get married.

Yes!!! My boyfriend and I have been together for 4 years, we’ve talked about marriage, kids, etc. He’s had the ring for awhile, he’s close to proposing, I can tell. πŸ™‚ Don’t think you’re nuts, I’ve had my dress for over a year. I’ve stocked up on other items also, reception items, vases, river rocks, candles and holders, etc.

@Ashleydee23:  It totally makes sense then… I can understand that you would want to find your dress with your mom, and I doubt you make it to the states that often if you live so far away! I would just ignore the snarky comments people are giving you!

I DID THIS~!! I felt funny doing it too but we already had our downpayment on our venue and everything. He was just saving for the ring. I ended up getting engaged a few weeks afterward!

I did, but we had also set a date/gotten a venue before being “technically” engaged. We knew when we wanted to get married, and that was peak season, so we nailed down the venue. It gave him time to work on his proposal (a custom iPhone app scavenger hunt!) so that he got to propose the way he wanted without us having to get married at a different time.

My only hesitation with your situation is not knowing a date/venue. It’s tough to get a dress when you aren’t sure how long it will be/the season/the formalness of the venue.

Lol you’re ready to go. I haven’t even bought a dress yet but that’s just one of many things on my list and one that you can cross out now!

Did anyone else buy there dress away from home? Im having to fly back with mine in May and thankfully the usual 3 months wait for alterations to be completed will only be a week while Im down for a kayaking course and a wedding shower.

I’m in the same boat. I’m just waiting for SO to save up enough money for the ring, which I’ve been told should be by June. Don’t feel embarassed for going dress shopping without a ring! It’s sad that there’s people out there who make girls like us feel like we’re crazy. A ring doesn’t make you anymore engaged or commited!! We have everything planned and like you said, some people can be rude about it. I’ve picked my dress out but I have yet to go try it on and it’s driving me crazy!!!!

Oh goodness! This is a bad thread to read. I am not engaged yet, but the bf and I have talked about getting married next summer (possibly) so I feel like I need to start planning even without the ring. I found a BEAUTIFUL dress, but it’s $150 and I just can’t seem to justify buying the dress just yet… And now, having read these posts, I feel REALLY tempted! Agh!
