weightwatchers152:  my RE was concerned about mine since I was taking a small dose of an SSRI because they are known to raise them.  Mine were in the normal range though. He was still uncomfortable with me being on the medication if it wasn’t absolutely necessary. They weren’t. They were a baby dose for some general anxiety that I started at a very stressful time in my life. So I got off them after getting an ok from the doctor of course.

I don’t really know how it affects an ability to get pregnant but I think it has something to do with the production of breast milk.

Some medications, like rispeiridone and Reglan, increase prolactin levels. Make sure your doctor knows about all of the medication you’re taking in case one of them is causing you to have higher than usual prolactin levels.

I had high prolactin levels detected 2 years ago.. I didn’t really notice many of the symptoms I had because they came on slow, but once I was put on cabergoline to lower them my boobs shrunk (only a bit, they’re still big), I stopped getting daily headaches, and my cortisol levels came down.  I also had badly treated hypothyroidism, which a new doctor discovered was the reason for my elevated prolactin levels.

Elevated prolactin levels, depending on how high, can mess with your cycle and throw your other hormones off… which can affect fertility.

weightwatchers152:  Did you fast before your bloodwork? After my CP I had bloodwork done, but didn’t know I was suppose to fast. When I went back, the levels were normal.

I had high prolactin levels the first time my dr tested. I did fast that morning but it was still high. I asked to have it redone in a month and the second time it was normal. Dr said at a certain time of day, everyday, our body releases a slight amount of prolactin which could have caused that result the first time.

Good luck!

I agree with all the posters above. Definitely get retested, early morning is good. Also make sure you get plenty of sleep and don’t do anything stressful, or have sex (breast stimulation can increase prolactin)

i’ve been dealing with a prolactinoma, which is a benign tumor on my pituitary gland that is overproducing prolactin. I’m telling you this not to scare you, but if the test comes back high again, make an appointment with an endocrinologist. Preferably one that has experience with prolactinomas. I found mine fairly early as we tried to have a second baby (i was a July ’13 momma and still talk to my badass bees daily) but I never got it my period back. I dealt with excessive weight gain, mood swings and infertility for over a year. I’ve been on bromocriptine and could not tolerate it, and now I’m on cabergoline, which combined with my Paleo diet, has been very successful. My tumor has stopped growing and should start shrinking soon, and my period has finally returned – I see a new OB this Friday to get the go-ahead to start trying for a baby again!
