Well not everyone follows/followed those “rules.” My dad proposed to my mom with something I can assure you was less than 6 months (or 3) pay. Everyone has different priorities and my parents have always been very smart spenders!

I heard 3 months but don’t think people should necessarily follow that. You should get what you can afford or what you and your Boyfriend or Best Friend is comfortable spending on an engagement ring.

I was married nearly 27 years ago (!) and the standard was 2 months.  I can’t imagine where six months comes from – it doesn’t make any sense.

Quite frankly, who allows a diamond company to determine how much you are supposed to spend  to buy their productSurprised

@ditzkitten:  I’m sure it’s common in some circles to spend 6 months or more. Were your families very well off? That’s the only thing I can come up with!

I’ve always heard 3 months BEFORE tax.  With taxes the way they are, that’s almost like 6 months after tax.  😉 lol

I don’t think “rules” such as these are necessary. The rule ought to be, whatever the couple agrees on. Six months seems like a whole lot though, for most people.
