@BrideToBrit: I did. I dyed 4000 red petals burgundy, then 2000 purple petals eggplant purple.

Since I was just dying the petals a dark color of the original, it didn’t take long. However, if you start from white, it’s going to take hours. And you can’t dye one color to another color unless it’s white from the start. I attempted dye some of the red petals to dark purple and it didn’t work.

@BrideToBrit: If you have white petals, you can get get them eggplant purple it will just take hours and hours on your stove to do it. You’ll have to let the petals simmer in the pot and turn them every 15 minutes for at least 4 hours until they get to the color you want.

When you want to check and see if it’s the true color you want it to be, take a couple of the petals that are dyed out of the pot and rinse them off to see if it’s the right color. If it’s not, just put them back. If it is, then you can take them off the stove and move on to the next batch.

I don’t know if this will help, but I picked up white flowers and needed ivory. they were the cheaper fake flowers, not silk. I went into the crafts store where I live and asked about what I could do to turn the flowers ivory and the woman led me to a spray paint made specifically for artificial flowers. I just picked up a can of ivory and sprayed them and they turned out great! I have pics in my gallery of the bridesmaid bouquets if you want to see how they turned out, they were super blinding white when I got them 🙂

I’ve never dyed them, but I have painted them. I just used a tempera paint. But you could probably also use something water-resistant. I suggest applying the paint with a sponge. Gets even that way.
