So, maybe like a month ago SO and I were at Old Navy. He was buying me a shirt and scarf I liked (He’s so sweet!), and we were at the register checking out. The cashier who was helping us was very nice, but the girl working a couple registers down leaned over and was like “Are you guys brother and sister?” I just looked at him like “What the eff?!” and looked back at her and said “…Um, no…he’s my boyfriend.” And then she proceeds to tell me that we “look just alike.” It was like SUPAH awkward. When we walked out of the store I was like (jokingly, of course) “Well, we have to break up now if people are gonna think you’re my brother.”
I’ve never thought that he and I look alike…but for like two days after that, I was like “OMG do I really look like him?” I’m over it now and that cashier was clearly crazy, but I just thought it might make for an interesting Bee thread 🙂

@CarolinaCola: No, that’s really strange!
When I was 12, my mom waited in the car while I took two of my three siblings (who were 6 & 8 to get chicken dinners at a festival thing at a very small, hickish-local town.
The lady handed me the tickets for the dinners and said here’s one for you and two for your kids.
I just stared at her. How the hell did a 5’3 skinny 12 year old look anywhere near old enough to have 6 & 8 year old children?

Hasn’t happened to me, BUT people have mistaken my brother for my fiance! SUPER AWKWARD!!
My fiance and I definitely don’t look alike though – my brother and I do (or at least people tell me we do, I don’t see it). Plus he’s 10 years younger then me, so I’m not sure why this person thought we were engaged.

People have pointed out that we look similar. And I’ve actually been asked multiple times if his sister is my sister. It doesn’t really bother me. Honestly if you lined up: Me, my husband, his sister, my brother, his wife, and her sister we could ALL be siblings. It is what it is.

@CarolinaCola: Yep, we’ve been told this a couple times. I have no idea how either, since we have different hair colors, eye colors, and very different heights and weights… but apparently we look related? lol. We just laughed it off. My FI’s my 7th cousin so we make fun of ourselves all the time for “being related.” 🙂

@hisgoosiegirl: Oh my goodness! THAT is weird!

you’ll be happy to know that studies have shown that physical resemblence in couples may be linked with higher retention rates due to a similar genetic makeup… that’s what I read 😉

@hisgoosiegirl: something like that happened to me once. I was 17 and at the grocery store with my mom. She was buy some wine along with our groceries, and the cashier asked to see both of our IDs. After my mom explained that I was her daughter, the lady says, “Oh! I thought you were her roommate or something!”. A good compliment for my mom, I suppose, who was 46 at the time!

@galloway111: Us too! He’s 6’5″, I’m 5’7″. I’m blonde, he’s brunette. I have blue eyes, he has brown eyes. Haha. Looking back, I should have said “Oh, he’s my brother and my boyfriend.” just to see what she’d say.

@CarolinaCola: Yes this has happened to us a couple of times. We both have a lot of chin :/ but he’s Peruvian and I’m not so I don’t ever get how they think we’re brother and sister.

@kmsw: Really? That’s interesting.

OMG, no thats crazy! HOWEVER, one time my brother was pulled over by the cops (I was in the passanger seat and we were going to buy an xmas tree).. and the cop for some reason was being an ASS, and alluded to us “doing stuff” in the car.. thats why he ran the red light. My brother was like… shes my sister douche.

It hasn’t happened with Fiance, but I had a boyfriend in high school and people thought we were brother and sister… and we were of completely different ethnicities! He was very obviously Hispanic, and I am as pale as a sheet. We rode the bus together and people would get on the bus and say, “Are you guys brother and sister?”

Nope! The benefits of being a inter-racial couple! 🙂

- Wedding: September 2011 - Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California)
Awkward! Though this is probably worse: my two cousins (bro and sis) used to be mistaken for boyfriend and girlfriend all the time. It was really weird.
Thankfully this has never happened to Darling Husband and me. Though one time we made the mistake of dressing similarly (totally on accident–we didn’t live together at the time), and everywhere we went, everyone was just oohing and awwwing over how “cute” we were in our matching outfits. It was kind of awkward because we weren’t 12 and didn’t love all the extra attention.
