Rome is amazing, but be prepared for the heat and the insane crowds if it’s American tourist season. The Amalfi Coast is unbelievably beautiful. I was really underwhelmed by Florence, bit if you love nothing more than museums, you’ll love it. The food in Bologna was fantastic, but it was kind of meh otherwise. Puglia is fantastic, but kind of hard to get to.

I recommend focusing on 1 or 2 cities, rather than trying to cover a lot of ground. You could easily tire yourself out with all the train travel and you don’t get to fully experience a place with just a few hours. There is so much to see and I don’t understand trying to see the entire country in a short trip. But that’s just how we like to travel. We had 10 days so we spent 2 days in Cinque Terre (stayed in Vernazza) and the rest in Florence. I strongly recommend renting an apartment in Florence, rather than a hotel. We got an amazing deal on a HUGE, gorgeous apartment for $100 USD per night on flipkey.com. We had laundry, a balcony and 2 bathrooms! We woke up every day to an Italian grandma singing while hanging her laundry on her balcony across the courtyard. We saved money buy getting breakfast and lunch stuff at a local market instead of eating at restaurants for every meal. The owner of the apartment spoke English and shared excellent restaurant recommendations that we would never have discovered in the guidebooks. We felt like we were living like the locals and we loved it!
