I have been researching officiants in my area and they are generally around $500 (not including rehearsal fees). The cheapest being $200. Out of curiousity, I looked up how much it costs to become an officiant.
Wait… what… in Arizona it is only $32 for a TWO YEAR license!
$500 seems outrageous for a 20 minute ceremony! Sure, they have to talk to you a little about what you’re looking for… but really? That just seems crazy.
Therefore I’m now looking into having one of my friends do it. Ive got plenty of outgoing people that would be great after watching a few Youtube videos of what to say. Plus they know us, so it will be nice to have a friend do it!
Wondering what tour experiences might be or your opinion on the idea?

We had a good friend officiate for us, and it was lovely. It meant so much more, having a dead friend up there, guiding is through the ceremony.

That’s what I’ll be doing! It will be an intimate wedding, so the fewer strangers there the better!

DH was the officiant for our friends. He did the online certification thing. They gave him a script. It was really nice 🙂 He didn’t charge them anything, they just got him a small gift as they did for everyone involved in the wedding.

I plan on having my best friend marry us. Not only is it less expensive, it’s even more personal as she’s my best friend and his cousin. We met through her so it’s the perfect way to include he in it all.
You can also get certified online, just make sure the state of Arizona recognizes it. I believe it was through the United Life Church.

I had my priest marry us. He is a friend to us and he happens to also be my boss. Haha so I do know him very well.
However, some of our best friends, had a friend get ordained online and he married them. It was also a short ceremony and he fit it around him. Once their other friends found out he actually married another couple before them so he got some “practice.” He also joined us on the party bus and was completely hammered like the wedding party- you don’t see that often.:)

yes!! My husbands best friend was our officiant and he was amazing.
Then last weekend his best friend married my best friend and my husband was their officiant!
I wouldn’t have had it any other way

My fiance best friend will marry us. He is a youth pastor so it came to be naturally in our case.

I was thinking of doing the same for my wedding, I had no idea how much money it would save us though! He’s just an amazing guy (spiritual/sweet/outgoing), so I figure he would make an amazing officiant. I may tell him again, but way more earnestly haha.

Our dads married us. They got “ordained” through American Marriage Ministries, I think. Mother-In-Law did a reading, my mom did a hand fasting, and SMIL did the ring warming. It was fantastic having all of them play a part 🙂

Thank you so much for the suggestions everyone! I think we are going to have his uncle who is a comedian and also has a Christian background to do it. He will bring the right amount of funny and tradition for our family. 🙂 Excited! You guys are the best!

My pastor is a great friend of mine & my parents. . .but was my friend first (and closer in age to me than them). He married my husband & I and it meant so much to me & my family. It made it really personal & special. I couldn’t suggest it more, having someone you know marry you. It’s just a whole different experience, for the better! He didn’t charge us anything, so we made a nice donation to the church.

It’s pretty common here to have friends be the officiant. Except in California, it costs $127 to file for a day-of-officiant license.. $32 is a steal 😛

Ouch, that sucks! I am so glad I’m one state over. Cali weddings (and everything I guess) are pretty ridiculous in cost!
