Not plants, but about 6 months ago my husband had his car battery stolen (he had left his car unlocked in the driveway).  He was not a happy camper that day. We live in a house, but I wouldn’t say we live in a ‘bad’ neighborhood.

Years ago I had just planted a nice flower garden in my front yard, only to come home one day to see that someone had ripped all of the flowers out and thrown them on the ground!  Guess I made an enemy somewhere! haha

I think cutting flowers is probably more common than straight-up boosting a potted plant. I could definitely see one of my high school boys cutting a neighbor’s flower to give to a girl, without thinking through the fact that someone had done a lot of work to plant and tend that flower. Kids might assume that flowers will grow back or that it’s part of nature and therefore free… but I’d be shocked if an adult stole a flower from a garden without asking the person who lives there first. Growing up, my neighbor across the street had a phenomenal garden and flower collection, and if you asked her, she’d happily let you cut a single bloom to give to someone. I also had to do a high school bio project where I collected leaves, so I walked around my neighborhood with a bucket and scissors one day, and asked neighbors if I could take leaf samples from their plants. I only had one person turn me down, so I think most people are pretty generous if you’re nice and not asking a lot…

Has not happened to me, but I heard of people that have gotten their sago palms stolen (these plants are slightly expensive). It occurs in random neighborhoods.

@moonadea:  all the chilis from my chili plants in the front yard disappeared, and i pretty much eliminated any other possible reason (literally overnight, every single chili ripe or otherwise vanished…over 30 of them). i think one of the neighborus nabbed them

we live in mexico, in suburbs of monterrey. easy access to yard from the street.

We have had our patio lights stolen, shoes stolen, pumpkins stolen etc from our porch. We just don’t leave anything of value outside.

Recently a store in my hometown posted video of a man driving up before they were open, getting out of his car and stealing the decorative hanging baskets they had placed outside the store. People will take anything that’s not nailed down these days!

I’ve not had this happen to me.

On a completely random note, whenever I see this thread pop up I read it as “has anyone ever had PANTS stolen from their yard or porch.”  I have to do a double take each time.  Embarassed

@GoldfishPie:  that totally sucks. is there easy access from the street? or how do they get to the mangos?

its weird, people dont seem to think taking fruit or veg is a problem(or even whole plants), but most of these people wouldnt dream of walking into your house and stealing…i dont know…. cash, jewellery or even low value things like books. but because its outside its somehow fair game

im totally irritated about my chilis (in a really disproportionate way :P) as im really new to growing things….so to have my first/only success story stolen (i killed all the green bean and courgette plants somehow) is just annoying

@Cady:  I had my sago stolen off a sunporch I had in my college rental house. I was jacked. I really liked that expensive plant.

I’ve also had a mini tree thing that I got at Lowe’s stolen. I don’t know the name of it, but it’s a common house plant.
