@LizLemon:  I have not had it, but just because your mother recently had it doesn’t mean that’s what you have. There have been a few threads here and there about shingles, so search for those, and find the bees that have suffered through it already.

Have you thought about what could be irritating your skin otherwise? Have you switched laundry detergents or soaps? And does the rash itch? Shingles typically don’t itch; they’re known to be very painful.

Good luck, and I hope it’s nothing serious.

Yes! I got them a month before the wedding due to stress. The derm said I was lucky to have a very minor case on my back only it was mid back so not visible in my dress. She gave me meds including steroids which I didn’t take because I didn’t want to gain weight before the wedding. It took a few months to completely go away.

Just wanted to mention that shingles appears as rashes in strips or lines on only one side of your body. Is that consistent with what you have?

Yes I have had shingles. I got them when I was 17. First it starts out as a rash, then turns to be VERY PAINFUL and it is itchy. Colamine(sp?) lotion helped a ton with itching and I got pain meds for it, also a shot in the butt. It took about a week or 2 to go away maybe a little longer for it to be completely gone. It left a little scar and my back is numb in that area now. I can feel my back but it def feels different when I touch/scratch it. Hope that helps 🙂 Hurry and get to the doc asap before the pain kicks in!!

Here is a pic how mine looked… it got a little worse than this then it scabs up.

@LizLemon:  awww boo!  just don’t take the steroids if they prescribe them.  they’ll make you swell up.

Oh man, shingles are terrible! Oddly enough, I’ve been getting shingles — or some variant — semi-regularly for the last 10 years. The first few times it was misdiagnosed as acne. Thanks, doc!

Any steroids are just to reduce inflammation, which might be important to protecting you from nerve damage that some people experience (MrsBoomBoom described some numbness). That said, I’ve never taken steriods — just antivirals to reduce the length of the outbreak and ibuprofen for pain and its anti-inflammatory properties.

These two things will get even harder as the wedding gets closer, but try to rest up and focus on nutrition. Good luck!

AWW! I was seriously hoping it was an allergy to spare you some of the pain that comes along with Shingles. Here’s wishing you a speedy recovery!
